Hi,
I would like to welcome Pavlo Fesenko to the group  :-)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi! I'm coaching at the CoderDojo Waterloo in Belgium and would like to implement a new wrist belt system that is cheaper and easier to use than the current official one. I would be happy to discuss my ideas and share experience with other CoderDojo mentors. Thanks!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regards,
Eugene

Hi Eugene,

Thanks a lot! As you mentioned, I'm trying to create an alternative wrist belt system (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1UTYTdPyjAEbnL86aAe_6IcthDA-srI6ZvIG2-G-PAvE) that could be used instead of the official CoderDojo wrist belt system (http://kata.coderdojo.com/wiki/Belts). The official system has 8 expensive belts (minimum 6-7 euros for each USB wrist belt) and focuses mostly on coding skills. In the alternative system I propose 5 cheap belts (around 1-2 euros for each silicone wrist belt) that encourage kids to develop soft skills and community spirit. I will be happy to hear your comments/remarks. Also feel free to share your CoderDojo experience using the wrist belts.

Best regards,
Pavlo

Hi Pavlo,
I think your proposal is awsome!

CoderDojo should incentivate collaboration and teamwork.
Belts must not be another point in which a kid is measured/evaluated.
In this perspective, stimulating a collaborative outcome should be welcomed.

Thanks for sharing this!

Laura

Hi Pavlo,

Looks great. The belts system is something that has existed in the community for a while now and some Dojos have awarded them for different things. There are some previous guidelines for belts that several members of the community have also created. You can see them here.

A thought, there are also Digital badges which could also be brought into the criteria for badges ie

  1. White belt

  • Ninjas should attend at least 2 sessions before applying for this belt.
  • It focuses on commitment and understanding of the CoderDojo’s project-based approach.
  • Ninjas should make a simple project and formally present it to the whole group.
  • The project should be realized with at least one basic tool that is typically used for education (Scratch, Trinket, App Inventor etc.).
  • CLAM THE DIGITAL BADGE ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROJECT
If you want to start a discussion on this for feedback you can also try posting this into the CoderDojo Forums as a discussion. You can do this here. Based on the engagement I'd also be happy to facilitate a group call in a few weeks time for anyone that wants to talk more about the belts system and discuss your Doc and any other ideas community members have.

@laura agreed, belts should be used for rewarding and encouraging creativity. The Coolest Projects have belts every year for all participants for this reason.

Looking forward to seeing peoples thoughts on belts.

Pete

Hi Laura and Peter,

Many thanks for your feedback!

My main reservations about the existing belt systems were high cost of USB belts (6-7 euros) and, in my humble opinion, lack of soft skill development.

I really like the idea of adding belts as digital badges as well. Do you know who can create them on the Zen platform? Although the physical belts are also very nice since everyone in the CoderDojo can easily see them =)

I tried posting it on the CoderDojo Forums but I can't login for some reason. I can login to the zen.coderdojo.com but when I want to go to the forum, it doesn't recognize my account for a very strange reason. Tried different PCs and browsers but with the same outcome. Do you know who I should contact regarding this technical issue?

This Sunday I'm going to have the feedback session with the coaches from our local CoderDojo but I will be also happy to have a video conference with anyone who is interested. Just let me know ;)

Best regards,
Pavlo

Hi Ramesh,

Below is an example of silicone wristbands. Is it something like this you were hoping to use Pavlo?

All the Best,

Nuala

Hi Pavlo,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I understand where you are coming from RE the expense of the belts. Partnering with local orgs can help with the funding of these belts. I do also like the idea of the cheaper alternative too, which could make it more accessible to some Dojos who may not be able to raise the funds.

There are already 14 different badges that CoderDojo ninjas can earn from attending their Dojo, you can see them here. The awarding of these can be managed by the champion of the Dojo via the platform. I think it is also a nice addition to the criteria of earning a physical badge to also have a digital badge as part of that journey of recognition.

Re the video conference, I'd love to join in can you share a link and the time it will be on and I will try to join 👍

Also I have mailed you directly to sort out any issues you are having with logging into the forums.

Thanks,

Pete

Hi Ramesh, Nuala,

Yes, you're right, these are the silicone wrist bands that we're planning to use. We are going to print the CoderDojo logo on them and I can post the pictures after we receive the order.

Pete, thanks for the help with the forum. Would you like to join our discussion with coaches? It's going to be offline but if you want, I can connect you to us via Skype or Hangouts =) We will be having it after our CoderDojo session on Sunday 22/1 around 12:30 (GMT+1).

Best regards,
Pavlo
