Hi Ross,
The CoderDojo Org group was put in place by CoderDojo Limerick in roughly Oct 2011, months after CoderDojo was founded.  It was set up by the community to support the community. While we fully support the new forums as the De facto place for ongoing CoderDojo discussion we have 2 issues:

1. They are not ready for this yet, has the email notification issue being resolved?
2. As has always being the vision it is important to have a independent fall back position in the event that the Foundation supported infrastructure fails.

So at no point will this list be "Closed", the CoderDojo community as always have the choice to chose with there feet and unsubscribe if they do not feel there is a place for this list.

Regards,
Eugene McDonough

Hi Eugene,

Thanks for your quick response. Firstly ‘closed’ was the incorrect word, what we intended on doing was to archive the group so we wouldn't lose the content and have it as a fallback as you mentioned. Currently email notifications are not enabled as we are running a older version of NodeBB, however this is something we are looking into upgrading ASAP but as we are heavily reliant on contributors to make this happen a deploy date hasn't been set yet. The Zen Forums is already gaining great traction already with 78 unique visitors a day. This google group hasn't had any new users added in over 5 months, We think it would be good idea centralise all forum activity to one location available to all verified champions mentors and parents.

Kind regards,

Ross O'Neill

Hi Ross;

Personally, I do not have time to log onto the zen forums just to see what, if anything, is being discussed. This email-based group is far more useful in my opinion.

Incidentally, I would suggest that, for a well-established group like this, the rate of new members added is not an ideal measure of relevance/importance.

Regards,

Michael.

Ross, I don't think archiving the list would be a good move.  It does amount to closing it.
CoderDojo is billed as an open source community initiative.

I think it is great that CoderDojo foundation has funding from Microsoft.  If CoderDojo foundation starts pushing Windows over Linux, I want to feel I have a place where I can go on doing things that benefit CoderDojo, in an open source way, without fear that what I say will be seen as disloyal.

Agreed.
Until email notifications are enabled on the new system, this group shouldn't be archived.
All that will happen if it is, is that I will no longer have any clue what's going on with the organization because I will not remember to take the time to go to the group for messages.
The new platform is not user friendly.

A similar response wouldn't ben possible on Zen becuse it is still too asyncronous

Thanks Eugene for pointing out the community ownership of this list!

Hi all,

Michael fully agree - We are looking to have email notifications enabled on the forums ASAP! Members would then be able to choose if they want daily, weekly or monthly digest.

- Although no. of new members isn't an ideal measure of impact, what we are trying to achieve is a fully open place for all members of the community new & old to be able to share knowledge, learn from each other etc. Over 75 new Dojos have started in the past 6 months, all of these champions are added to the forums on verification of their Dojo.

- James - Absolutely agree which is why the entire Zen platform, including the forums is open sourced, all code is fully available on GitHub. We'd never push any product or platform over one another and always welcome discussion on different technologies and how they work in a Dojo context. We believe its great learning for all global Dojos. On Kata we only add context that is free to use, and last year added a specific section for partner resource (like Microsoft) so the community can decide on what they wish to use.

- There were lots of discussions here in the past about the downsides of Google Groups, and members expressed the desire to see the forums being deployed instead. Fully understand that w/o email notifications, it dose not fully meet its purpose. So I'll update everyone here as soon as we have an update on email notifications.

Warmest

How many of the organiser group, or mentor/ founder community were part of the decision process folks, I am sure you must have had some kind of consultation process/ inclusion, what was it?
I think its great as someone mentioned that we have Microsoft as s sponsor now, is there a list of benefits from this that might perk people up?

Best Regards,
John.

Hi John,

This time last year we ran a long open consultation process where community members were invited to give feedback on the proposed spec for Zen and its features. We had google groups, conducted 1:1 calls with volunteers and also open workshops where we received input from various people. Forums was one feature that many members requested because they found threads in google groups difficult to follow.

Regarding Microsoft, they are one of the funders of the Foundation, their donation enables us to support volunteers all around the world in getting their Dojo up and running. It also allows us to continue to invest in resources for the community such as the overhaul Kata had last year, website improvements, Zen etc. Dojos will also get access to certain Microsoft technologies (which have been requested in the past) hoping to get more details surrounding this from the team shortly!

We are in the middle of our 2015 audit and will be publishing it along with our annual report detailing the work we did last year in early Q2 for anyone interested in more information surrounding this.

Thanks so much,

Giustina

Thanks so much back atcha Giustina, now everyone can see history and genesis so there are plenty of people on this group then who have been involved in those 1:1s. All seems very reasonable to me if that was the case.

Maybe they can give their opinions...?

John.
