Hi All,
As you will have noticed I have been testing automated updates on blog posts and new forum discussions over the last week.

I would like to find out from the group if they find these helpful or too much. The last thing I want is people leaving the group because of too many updates :-(

I look forward to hearing your view either in the group or directly.

Hi All,
So the few emails replies I got were all in favour of the updates so I will keep them up and fine tune them.

The next issue to resolve is how we can feedback the good advice that is imparted here back into the forums. To start with I can re-post back to the forums and give any responses here however it would be good to have a method of automating this also, any ideas?

Eugene, if it can be setup with an option to opt out of a particular subject, without leaving the overall group, that would be the utopian situation, I think 😀. Is that possible?

Regards,

John.

Hi John,
I can't think of a way to do that on a person by person basis through the list.

If I go ahead I would only crosspost on topics that were commented on here as other were not of interest to the people on here.

Hi Eugene;

How about you duplicate the membership of coderdojo-org (if that’s possible) to a second list, called something like coderdojo-forums, and then people can unsubscribe from the latter if they wish?

Michael.

Hi Michael,
I could do that, however, the main reason for dong the auto posts was to get input and discussion among the people on this list who are very early CoderDojo adopters and most have a preference for email over having to visit a forum.

Splitting out the list will have the effect of further splitting the community and I would rather stop the autopost then further split the community :-)

Hey Eugene,

There seems to be a mixed message in terms of those that want to opt in/out to receive the messages. While it is totally awesome for the posts from the forums to be shared with the group to get a discussion going, a lot of the members are already receiving this information as they chose too.

Also the important info / insights that have been shared in response to some of these posts in the org group does not get shared back on the forums, like for example the questions on setting up a 501(c) status earlier down in the org group. As you said the main aim of sharing here is to let those that want to respond share their insights with other community members. Unfortunately the current auto post set-up is not allowing the group to do this.

I agree with you on stopping the posts to prevent splitting the org group up. Those that are interested in receiving a digest can visit the forums if they choose. I can organise to share monthly / bi monthly / weekly info / communications in this channel if that would promote input and discussion from the group?

The forums have a RSS feed per category however I have no way of targeting just one person on the list.

Each of you could setup your own IFTTT rule on the category you are interested in but that would be up to each individual.

Who on this list currently gets emails notifications from the forums and what frequency have you it set to?

I get it daily.

If the official forum is still inoperable for users entirely through email, as in the good old Listserv, these alerts are a blessing even if for a few users, given that it's no extra effort for you with automating it, and no cost to CoderDojo  - just my opinion based on lessons learned from running virtual communities in the b2b space.

Thanks
Ramesh

Hi Ramesh

The forums are fully operational after being upgraded in full back in Spring. There is search functionality, a choice of daily, weekly email digest and a number of categories. Engagement has been great on them we'd love for you to take a look.

Warmest

Hi Ramesh,
As stated the forums are working for email in that you can get  a choice of daily, weekly email digest  as stated by Giustina. I use this and have posted to the forums and will continue to post.

That been said you can respond by email which some people have a preference for and my auto post to this group were my efforts to include them in the discussion the same way as CoderDojo is also discussed on Facebook, LinkedIn, twitter and such.

The community needs to be allowed to engage in the medium they are happy with and not forced into one medium or the other.

Hi Nuala - is it possible to send me a link to the video? The download file didn't play for me.

Hi Giustina - thanks so much for your note. I will check it out.

Hi Eugene - thanks for clarifying. In my experience, virtual communities have most engagement when there are least number of hurdles.  Email inbox is ubiquitous, even among millennials preparing for an entry into the job market.  So I have found that the most engaged users prefer to participate just by directly clicking on 'Reply' or 'Reply-All' when responding to posts that come in via their email. Having said that, most forum users are observers (lurkers), perhaps because it's hard to be vulnerable in a public forum by putting one's ideas up for public scrutiny. When we add a necessity for them to go to invidual forums and check for conversations, now that is extra effort they may not make.  In such cases they may prefer digests, and then reply privately if they have something of value to contribute, assuming the digests are well formatted.

We live in a world that is very distracted. Striving to keep things simple is a worthwhile pursuit. I would love to see an ability to participate in the forum directly from an email inbox if it isn't already there (haven't seen Nuala's tutorial video yet).  That is easier said than done, so I very much appreciate the progress we have made so far.  I normally scan various forums I participate in, or moderate, via my email and respond swiftly but thoughtfully where I have something useful to say.

The reason CoderDojo's own forum is mission-critical, I believe is because it doubles as a grassroots knowledge-base. I will check out the official forum and try to post in both in future if I have something worthwhile to say. If there is any lesson to take from the disappearance of tools such as Google Reader and Picasa, it is that if we are building a knowledge-base for our future generations, we are better off having our own branded forum.

Best wishes,
Ramesh

Hi Ramesh,

Glad you will check out the new forums - it would definitely be really useful for the rest of the community (and the Fdn) to get your advice and feedback.

Completely understand about the email reply-to and this is something we are looking into implementing as an option if offered by our forum provider as we understand that this is easier for some users.

Best wishes,

Rosa

Hi Rosa,

I will definitely use the official forum for new discussion threads and post in both places.

If the forum software is not built in-house, then you may have less say over the features. I suspect, forcing people to go back to a webpage to use a forum became more common since facebook but then they need to show you ads to survive and your clicks on their web-page are an imperative.

I searched high and low some 6 months ago for a business forum software that will meet a few important additional criteria since I am building a brand for the long haul and it will become a knowledge-base over a period of time.  These are the criteria as far as I can recall:
  1. entirely operable from any email account - where you are not at some point forced to create a gmail or other specific email account,
  2. searchable archive
  3. no downloads required
  4. no account creation required (except for archives)
  5. easy for all age groups (18 and above) to use
  6. exportable contact list
  7. exportable database in case I want to bring it in-house when the project justifies funding it well.
  8. low cost of operating it, and supporting it technically without adding staff.
  9. no distractions of user-profiles and the posturing that goes along with it
  10. highly scalable to thousands of users, without depending on the uncertainties of how Google makes decisions about it's product.
I settled on technology which existed since the 1980's: http://www.lsoft.com/. It does not look as attractive as some of the modern interfaces, but it works really well, and is very dependable. It is still an interim measure, but gets the job done really well.

I had found a startup that had the above features and more, but by the time I was ready to start my first order, the founder abruptly advised me that he had decided to shut down his business and take up a job instead. I suggested that he run it on the side, but he was emotionally spent, so he gave me the option of buying the code for 100K or he was willing to put away his code in cold storage. Lsoft at the very low end costs ~ $400 a year and is a stable company.

It's sad to see so many startup founders bury their code when they can't find a business model. But that's a topic for another discussion. Hope this helps.

Ramesh
