This is EU Code Week - can we allocate a few minutes for something different & useful?

A bit last moment, I know, but I thought maybe we could put aside about 10 minutes for a few quick tips that could be useful to various people?

Make it a quick-fire thing, ask if any kids have ideas they want to pass on that would make life easier for others, really short, only about a minute each, maximum 2 minutes.

Could include things that parents might find useful so everyone in the room feels engaged.

I could add this as an "event" on the EU Code Week site, but can only think of "Quick Time Saving Tips for everyone" - has anyone a better phrase?!

What does everyone think?

Sandra

P.S. I'd also like to ask the kids to do an online survey so we can see how many people are doing what, and also see if there's anything they'd like to do.
What topics should I add, e.g. Scratch, AppInventor, HTML/CSS, Minecraft modding, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Swift ...

Quick note , apologies but I'm not available for the session this evening. there is new Pi sushi material on the website though, most of which can be completed on any PI as it's very basic "getting started" stuff

Hey Sandra,

Great idea, I am personally in favour of a task based model, like an actual lesson in each class. Whereby the kids are set tasks to complete week to week be it something small like:

"this week everyone is going to create/brainstorm an idea for an app that would improve everyday life" the kids could get creative with art materials. Maybe creating an inspiration board on a5 sized card bringing it into class the next week to show off their concepts. Creative thinking is nearly always done away from computers.

Then the next week they could start bringing their concepts to life through code.

"This week we are going to lay down the foundations/code/rules of the app" identifying holes or flaws in their plans before they start actually building it and get bored when it doesn't work like it should. A kind of SWOT analysis of their ideas. Then send them home to fix the weaknesses/threats that have arisen.

The next week:

"This week we are gonna fluff out the graphic design of the app, make it engaging and user friendly"

So on and so fourth until each child has a project they can be proud of, not just a bit of code that lacks visual appeal.

I know Lexi does really well when she can add pink sparkles and glitter and sounds to projects. It's a case of visually stimulating the kids so they can see what they can create, but more importantly the different stages of creating something.

I hope this makes sense.

Rachel

I want to run the workshop session this week (I didn't do it last week)
It actually subscribes on the same notion you're describing Sandra.
However this won't work with 60+ kids. I was thinking more like 10 to 15 in a separate room.

Sorry, replied earlier but forgot to include anyone other than Harold!

"The smaller room (C013, round the corner) will take 10 to 15 easily.
How long do you want in there? We could either make sure both rooms cover the same thing, or stagger timings to suit.

I was thinking of a really high speed thing, someone with a timer - you have to be less than, e.g. 2 minutes!  See if maybe we can identify a couple of kids in advance that aren't shy, ask them will they jump up and offer a QUICK tip, then we can hop around between kids & mentors (maybe even a couple of parents) for a few minutes, so everyone can learn something new and easy in a fun, high-energy atmosphere!

A couple of tips might be -
Ctrl-C or Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V
Google search - the difference between entering a phrase to search, and putting the words in quotes.
Opening a new tab in your browser.
Moving up and down a webpage with Spacebar/Shift Spacebar
Name a website that's good for learning tips for Scratch, Java, Raspberry Pi, whatever ..."

Additionally, I've made a very short survey to ask the kids to do this evening so we can see where we need resources - would be grateful if people could have a look and see if I need to add anything else -
