Dear Parents,

now that CoderDojo Bray's regular sessions are finished for the summer months, you might be wondering what coding you can get your Ninja's working on during the summer.
Yes, we will have our "Dojo Divas" in July, and yes later in the summer we will probably have a CodgerDojo.

But what else can they do?

We've been sent some information on the "Coolest Projects" competition run by DCU, sponsored by Intel.
The information follows below.

Maybe your ninja would like to enter?

We'll be in touch later in the summer about our new season, and about any other events we run during the summer.

Kind Regards
Bray Team

Subject: Coolest Projects 2013

We would like to invite your dojo to participate in the CoderDojo Coolest Projects Awards 2013.  To celebrate everything the members are learning and to encourage their exploration throughprojects we setup this event. The key ethos for the event was to enable members take what they have learned in CoderDojo to a new creative level, a level that we could not have imagined.  This event is completely focused on the members.

Could you please forward this information onto any parents of interested CoderDojo members.  The projects are open to all levels and does not matter if the project is always developed.  Above all we are looking to celebrate the projects the members are creating.  If you have any questions please send them on.

This year the awards will be held in Dublin City University during September.   Registration and details about projects events can be found at http://www.coolestprojects.org/#register.  This awards are limited to 150 projects so we would encourage members to register their idea ASAP.  Registration will be closed once we reach this limit.

Unlike other projects awards we are all about the cool and we want to award everyone involved.  Every attendee will receive a Coolest Projects Awards belt for presenting their great work.  We also ensure the event can cater for all levels within CoderDojo so have defined the following categories:

    Scratch
    Web
    Apps
    HTML Games
    Advanced language projects
Enterprise - anyone who has launched their project
    Other

We really want to encourage everyone who attends and also celebrate the Coolest Project in each category who will receive a prize.  To encourage creativity and the amazement in what is being created the evaluation criteria will make this open to every member at all levels.

    50% Coolness of idea
    20% Presentation of project
    15% Design
    10% Usability
    5% Complexity

A second event will take place later in the year at Intel where a selection of the cool projects presented at the awards will be asked to re-present.

At last years event, the inspiration was everywhere. We seen really cool projects built after only 3 months attending CoderDojo is amazing and you should be very proud. This highlights the members potential so lets encourage them to keep being creative, challenge themselves and they will achieve greatness.   Some cool facts from last years event

17 projects were presented with everyone getting a belt for their achievement
Coolest Project was created by Maciej Goszczycki who developed his new programming language called Oda
Chris and Chloe Burke created a new App to help students Maths Theorems and launched it for free on the play store.  Chloe presented her work at the RTE Digital Mobile conference this year.  (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apptheorems&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hcHB0aGVvcmVtcyJd)
Catriona created a project to teach people music this project has now inspired UK education (http://www.siliconrepublic.com/innovation/item/32783--wit2013/)

We were amazed by the excitement around last years event and how much the presenters and other dojo members who attended got from the day, with everyone wanting to get involved inCoolest Projects 2013.  I would encourage you to consider your dojo participating as it will act as catalyst for other members to take their learning to new levels working on projects that excites them.

This day is open to all dojos, whether presenting or not.  Invites for the event will be sent out later in August.

Encourage creativity and they will amaze,

Looking forward to seeing you in September,

Coolest Project Team
