Hi there,
Shane here from the Currach Press in Dublin. I was at a eBook conference recently and was discussing with somebody the possibility of developing an App for children surrounding a Children's book we are publishing. I think it would make a great project for some of your young students and would benefit them greatly to be associated with what we anticipate to be a highly successful publication. The book is a fantasy novella (the first in a series) where owls can talk to children and magic is abundant. The children go on a magical journey on a boat called The Ark of Dun Ruah, but it is under surveillance by an evil warlord owl who has taken over a nearby island. The children set about to help the people regain control of their island and are eventually successful. It is a simple narrative that will appeal to a broad age range.
We had an idea to develop a children's gaming App around the book and launch it in conjunction with the publication, and when we were told about the Dojo groups around Dublin we thought what better than an App for Children created by children. We hope you will see it as a viable project for some of your students. We would be appreciative of anything they could come up with and would love to hear their ideas. We would also welcome an App from beginners to advanced students. It might also be an idea to run a competition between groups, but you would know best.
We would of course supply the Kids with the book so they could have a read and get the gist of the story (and get a free book) and they would be invited to showcase their project at the Launch which hopefully will have media in attendance.
I hope you are as excited about this as I am and I hope we can work together to make something fun and worthwhile. I think fun needs to be the main aspect of this whole project.
Here are some of the Characters in the book:
Simon Macken’s greatest passion is experimenting with fireworks and explosives. The fire brigade have been called several times after his botched experiments in the garden shed. He wants to live in The Land of Fire where he can give up school and concentrate on pyrotechnics.
Kerry is Simon’s guardian and older sister. She is a designer who finds it hard to make a living in the little town of Kilbeggin. Kerry is invited to Fire City to work as a fashion designer for the President. She’s a home bird and scared of what Simon will do if his obsession is unleashed.
Pod is a cranky old owl with royal blue feathers who lives in the loft of Macken Cottage with two other birds, the Swiftails. His nerves are shattered after days of being stalked by Giant Eagles. He’s certain that the trip to the Land of Fire will be a disaster.
Red Beak is the King of a rare breed of Giant Eagles, big enough to carry humans. He wants to abduct Pod for his Royal Blue feathers which are more valuable than diamonds to eagles. This could give him the power and influence he needs to take over the world.
Malachy is a prophet, also known as the Messenger. He comes from an ancient realm and has extraordinary powers. He is the protector of the Ark of Dun Ruah and fearless. Will he be the one to challenge Red Beak and end his reign of terror?
I look forward from hearing from you shortly!
