Notes from meeting on 01/05/2012
setting up Coder Dojo Clon? or Clon Coder Dojo? (think I like the first name- we need to think about that)Present: Margaret Kennedy, Ann O Donnell, Deirdre Connolly, Claire Morris, Joseph Mccarthy, Xavier ..,Humphrey Deegan, Apologies if names incorrect1. Pilot session to take place on Friday 18th May from 6.30-8.30pm at The Imperial Hotel (thanks to Humphrey for venue). This is have a dry run where any glitches may be ironed out such as adequate power points, ability of WiFi connection to cope with potential high volume of traffic etc. We agreed to invite only a limited number of children to this session with the plan to publicise the dojo for a full launch on May 25th2. Imperial hotel has been offered for a projected period of perhaps 8 weeks taking us up to end of July. There will not be a dojo held in the month of August.3. Claire and Margaret to draft a proposal to present to the Board of Management at the convent secondary school, in the hope of securing the use of the convent computer room from September.4. Ann to set up page on dojo website advising parents of the following; parents must stay with children, need to bring a laptop, ways of supporting your child in the session. Same info may be used on flyer. Flyer to be sent out after pilot session, Rosscarbery had a fantastic response after a similar flyer drop a few days before the first session. Ann has also kindly agreed to give a welcome talk at the first session.5. James to source the dojo code of conduct re; bullying and being 'cool' and will print this up in large format to place around the venue.6. Deirdre will talk to David Henry from Quality Hotel as another potential venue and identified potential mentors.7. Margaret and Claire to look into approaching personnel at tech park also re: mentors.8. Garda vetting procedure and permission slips to be looked into, possibly Margaret/Claire/Deirdre9. Agreed that all would become familiar with the 'Scratch' programme available through Google or MIT website. this, we learned, is a fun way to learn for children to learn coding (and not too hard for us either). We identified that there may be a need to have different levels of learning ; the scratch programme would be suitable for younger coders and Ann agreed to teach older coders html.Hope I captured the important bitsClaire

Subject: Clonakilty Coderdojo!!
Thank you all for coming this evening.
Just to confirm Clonakilty's first (pilot) Coderdojo will be at the Imperial Hotel on Friday 18th May from 6:30-8:30.
This will be limited to our own children and limited friends.
The following week we will send out flyers to the schools to promote it for Friday 27th May.
We propose to do some Scratch and HTML on the first night.
In the meantime it is worth looking at http://coderdojo.com/help-us/i-want-to-start-a-coderdojo-right-now/
Scratch can be downloaded from http://scratch.mit.edu/ - I will work on a suitable sample to work with on the first night. Ann will do some html on the night.
Claire kindly took minutes tonight and will send them on.
Paschal - I will call you tomorrow and fill you in.
Micheal/Diarmuid - I am including you on this email as we will use this for group messages for Clonakilty if thats ok.
In the meantime let us know if you find any more potential mentors.
Best regards,
Margaret
