June 25 Torture Accountability Action Day

Are you troubled that people broke the law and authorized torture and
inhumane treatment of detainees? Help us hold them accountable,
especially the three torture enablers who are right here in the Bay
Area: Jim Haynes, John Yoo, and Jay Bybee. The Bay Area joins DC,
Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Pasadena, Seattle, Portland, Las
Vegas, Honolulu, Salt Lake City, Charlotte, Anchorage and other cities
in calling for torture accountability.

Jim Haynes: Do It Yourself Ethics Complaint
Tell State Bar: Torture Lawyers Should Not Be Practicing Law in
California
As General Counsel for the DOD under Donald Rumsfeld, Wm. "Jim" Haynes
crafted legal memos for some of the most heinous torture techniques
authorized by Bush. He now works for Chevron in San Ramon and is
licensed by the California State Bar. The SF National Lawyers Guild
Committee Against Torture filed an ethics complaint against Haynes
with the bar and has crafted a simple form so you can file your very
own! CODEPINK wants to file hundreds of individual ethics complaints,
so please join in! This is VERY SIMPLE. You just need to fill in your
name, address, phone number, and signature on the complaint and mail
it to the SF National Lawyers Guild address shown . Get the complaint
here www.nlgsf.org/news/view.php?id=109

Then on Thursday, June 25, at 11:00 am there will be a press
conference at the State Bar office in San Francisco when we file all
of the complaints. Join us: California Bar Association, 180 Howard
St., SF.

June 25, 12 noon: "Bye Bye Bybee" Rally
9th Circuit Court, 95 7th Street @ Mission, San Francisco

Judge Bybee has a lifetime appointment to the 9th Circuit Court. We
call for his resignation, impeachment, disbarment and prosecution.
Featured speaker: Ray McGovern! Sing "Bye Bye Bybee" with Betsy Rose,
participate in submitting a formal misconduct complaint to the 9th
Circuit Chief Justice. Participating groups: Veterans for Peace, PDA,
SF Nat'l Lawyers Guild Committee Against Torture, National
Accountability Network, CODEPINK

"These memos.... were written to provide legal immunity for acts that
are clearly illegal, immoral and a violation of this country’s most
basic values....These memos make it clear that (Judge Jay) Bybee is
unfit for a job that requires legal judgment and a respect for the
Constitution. Congress should impeach him." –New York Times, Sunday,
4/19

June 25, 7:30 pm: "Our Himmlers, Eichmanns Unscathed as Obama Dithers:
Why Is He Afraid of the Torturers?"
Special Appearance by Ray McGovern from D.C.

BFUU Fellowship Hall, 1924 Cedar St. @ Bonita, Berkeley. $5-$10
donation, Co-sponsors CODEPINK & Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian
Universalists Social Justice Committee.

"I don't want my grandchildren, of whom I have six now, coming up to
me when they're old enough and saying, 'Grandpa, you worked for the
CIA. What was it like torturing people?' I would say I didn't torture
people, and they would say as the German kids say to their parents,
'What did you do to stop it?'"
Ray McGovern was a CIA analyst for 27 years. He returned his CIA
"Intelligence Commendation Award" medallion in 2006 saying "I do not
wish to be associated with torture". He cofounded Veteran Intelligence
Professionals for Sanity and works with "Tell the Word", the
publishing arm of the ecumenical Church of the Saviour in Washington,
DC. McGovern’s famous confrontation of Donald Rumsfeld lying about
Iraq WMD is shown here on Keith Olbermann:

mcgovern_ rumsfeld/

Plus: Jon Eisenberg, the lawyer representing the plaintiffs in the
famous warrantless wiretapping case Al-Haramain v. Bush. Jon is
calling for Jay Bybee's resignation from the 9th Circuit.
"I wonder whether Bybee feels guilty before God. He certainly has no
business being a federal judge. His presence on the Ninth Circuit U.S.
Court of Appeals brings disgrace to that court. He should resign." Jon
Eisenberg in the San Francisco Recorder

Updates on torture accountability campaigns: SF National Lawyers Guild
Committee Against Torture, Amnesty International, CODEPINK, PDA,
Veterans for Peace.
Music: Carrie Gerendasy; "her singing is topical, relevant, downright
gorgeous"

Sunday, June 28, 4-6 p.m. "SHAME ON YOO"
1241 Grizzly Peak, Berkeley, John Yoo’s house. Come for an hour!
Witness against “torture professor” John C. Yoo. Yoo wrote shoddy and
unethical legal memos greenlighting inhumane treatment and torture
under Cheney/Bush. We ask UC Law School to dismiss Yoo, Pennsylvania
to disbar him, and the Department of Justice to appoint a special
prosecutor to investigate and if warranted, prosecute him. Contact:
cynthia_p...@yahoo.com

Join the call for Yoo's accountability:
1. Call U.C. Law School Dean Christopher Edley and ask him to dismiss
Yoo on grounds of professional misconduct and complicity in torture:
510-642-1741
2. Add your name to the campaign to disbar Yoo and other "torture
lawyers".

Article in the "Berkeley Daily Planet" about this action.

"I ask you, out of a concern for justice, a concern for humanity, and
a concern for our reputation as a university, to dismiss Professor
John Yoo from membership in our university." UC Professor Brad DeLong
to U.C. Law School Dean Edley.
