This year we are kicking around the idea of doing "CodeMash After
Dark", which consists of a set of sessions occurring in the early
evening on Thursday. These sessions are not necessarily technical in
nature, but otherwise cover topics which are of general interest to
CodeMash attendees. While they are led by an instructor (notably an
expert on the topic), there are not necessarily slides, nor would
attendees need to bring laptops or anything like that. Session
attendees could probably even bring in a drink from the cocktail party
and hang out. The sessions would probably be an hour or so, but there
aren't really any set rules. As usual, we are winging it. :-)
Obviously the CodeMash crowd has a pretty eclectic set of hobbies,
ranging from lockpicking to chess to Go to beer brewing to
electronics. If you have a cool hobby and would like to share your
passion with other attendees, please respond to this thread with your
pitch.
While the CodeMash committee reserves the right to make the final
selections due in part to various logistical factors (we are planning
on anywhere between 4 to 6 After Dark sessions), obviously we're going
to pay attention to this thread to gauge interest so please speak up
if somebody makes a pitch which you find interesting. After we see a
number of pitches pile up, we will come to some decisions and get in
touch with the associated instructors.
BTW pitches don't have to be thrown out by potential speakers! If you
would simply like to learn more about a particular topic, add it to
the list! Even if a session wasn't organized around that particular
topic, perhaps like-minded individuals could get together at CodeMash
and do an open spaces.

As far as the general idea of an "After Dark" track. [Expletive] Yes!

What about a session on home brewing? If this year is anything like the past, there will be several kegs of home brew floating around in the suites. Seems like a fitting "after dark" session. ;-)

Yes! Our good pals at GitHub are sponsoring the waterpark portion of the attendee party for us!
Each week, for over two years, I have announced on Sunday or Monday evening all the Cleveland tech meetings, social media events, blogger groups, and some of Cleveland's startup/entrepreneur meetings. I have also run the WebSigCleveland.org meetings for over five years.
If there is an After Dark session on users groups, I would be open to sharing. Let me know how I could be of asistance.

Me too on this one. They had an open session during the day last year but I missed it with all the other stuff going on. I’d really like to have night session or two on .net micro framework and Arduino. Unfortunately I’ve not played around with them yet though this is motivation enough to pick one up and start.
BTW - I’m heavily into ham radio on the side so I’m willing to help with basic electronics (ohm’s law type things) if you get a group like that together (last year there were some other hams that came but we never got together – heck we ought to have a night session just on ham radio).

Subject: [CodeMash] Re: CodeMash After Dark - session pitches
I'd be interested in an after hours session (or even a regular session) on device programming with Arduino prototyping boards or maybe the .Net Micro Framework and .Net Gadgeteer tools and their prototyping boards (similar appeal as Mindstorms without the legos and prebuilt plugable components if you haven't heard of them before). I've always wanted to play with these and learn to dabble with the electronics side of things but haven't been able to find the time so I certainly couldn't present on the topic. Is anyone else interested in this topic? Has anyone played with either of these enough to lead a session?

Would be interesting to see a "CodeMash On The Air" event... have CodeMash QSL cards. Just throwing it out there, that's probably asking a lot..

I would be interested in the ham radio stuff. I am just starting to read a book to get a license since I know most of it from the military. I also like the arduino idea.
Well then there’s 3 of us. A technician licensing session might be a good idea too. I we could get some VE’s from the area maybe we could have some tests and some newly licensed hams could walk away from CodeMash

Matt,
I am Cubmaster of my sons pack, I'd be happy to participate!
Could you have open spaces during this time too?I would love to have an open space for cub scouts leadership where I could share with other people involved with cub scouts or boy scouts.

That would be fun! A pack achievement management system that could track progress of each cub would be cool... I'm sure it's been done but it would be a fun exercise!

My wife is taking a database class for her master's and is modeling the organization of scout achievements and tracking for a project. Maybe this can be used as a starting point.
She should get her geek mom badge for using excel to run our Pinewood Derby races for the past four years. Makes a race with 60+ scouts run smoothly.
Thanks,
Kevin
Please submit all after dark session ideas to this thread. "Selection"
of the after dark sessions is a much more informal process, one which
will primarily be based on the discussion generated as a result of the
pitches, and secondarily upon logistics surrounding whatever might be
involved with organizing the session.
So far Go and ham radio seem to have caught the attention of quite a
few people. I'm sure there are a few other ideas too which at the
moment I can't recall, I'll look back at the thread for another look.

There was a lot of good response for doing a longer session of
lightning talks. I'm willing to organize/run them.

Each pumpkin has in essence a home built arduino in it (although I
just tend to flash my own firmware on to the chips instead of using
arduino) that communicate via RS485 from a computer to control them.
For my Halloween party this year, I am hoping to complete a drink
machine that can make cocktails from 8 different ingredients.
Let me know if anybody is interested in getting together to talk about
microcontroller development. I would love to see what others are
doing as well whether it's arduino development, AVR's, PIC's, FPGA's,
etc...
Kevin
Those interested in getting their license are encouraged to visit http://www.qrz.com and set up an account where you can run through the real test questions online. You can also pickup testing books with great explanations at http://www.w5yi.org/catalog.php?sort=4. Morse code is no longer a requirement for the license (even so its popularity continues to grow) just an fyi.
Absolute noobs should start with the Technician class book and then move up to General and then Extra - each giving you additional privileges.

Right now I am focused on Xna and 3d. We have a growing user group in

Topics that interest me:

- Cross platform mobile games.
- Successes with 3d modeling tools.
- learning to think in 3d.
Maybe i should goto a GameDev conference sometime.
I'm a hobbyist at this stuff, but have learned alot. I can speak only
