Hi Codelab folks,

I would like to embed videos into my Google Doc and serve them on my Codelab tutorials. I couldn't find a way to embed a video in a Google Doc. Is this possible? A bunch of Google search results tell me no.

If so, any ideas on how I can incorporate short (2 minute max) screen recordings to demonstrate how to perform something in the tutorial?

Thanks for your help,
Anna

Could gif image work instead? I think I've seen some codelabs with gif-animated images but not entirely sure.

As a workaround, you could include a screenshot of a video frame, with a "click here to watch video" link below the image.
Not optimal, I know, but it works.

Yes I considered the GIF but I'll have to ask management about that stylistic choice.
Thanks for the feedback and confirmation that I wasn't overlooking something simple.

Hi Marc,

Is it known that I can't add a hyperlink to an image and have it working in a Codelabs tutorial? That is, when I click on the image, nothing happens. There's no link there.

Thanks,

Anna

Hi Anna,

Sorry for the delayed response, I've added your observation (about links to images not working) to the existing bug about embedded video and will take a closer look.

Marc

Youtube Videos can be embedded by doing:

  • Add an image in the document. The image can be a screenshot of the video for instance but it doesn't really matter since it won't be displayed but replaced by the embedded video.
  • Add an "Alt Text" to the image by doing Cmd+Opt+Y or Right click > "Alt Text..."
  • Put a Youtube video link in the Description field of the Alt Text. in the format https://www.yoututbe.com/watch?v=[video_ID]

Specifying a start time is not supported at this time.

Hi,
I am still unable to upload videos. Recently, we started having issues with videos hosted on Google Drive- even though they are set to publicly viewable, only people inside our organization can see them. Here is where I have the video on Drive & how I was using it to publish to codelabs:

#### Video

Notice where I have it published, in our repo of Google Code Labs hosted on GCP using the link above, the video thumbnail shows up but the video will not play:

We contacted Google support for our shared drive video sharing problem and got a response it was `expected behavior`-- this is very problematic as we host all our training with codelabs and none of the videos are available! I'm trying to embed a version of the video from youTube here:

I've tried the following ways to embed it, but none of these work:

1) ![https://youtu.be/DWAinkJ54D8](assets/puppy.jpg) -- claat processing failed
3) <img src="assets/puppy.jpg" alt="https://www.yoututbe.com/watch?DWAinkJ54D8" width="500"/> -- only puppy image showed up

Any help or suggestions? So much work down the drain if I can't share videos!

Hi Lindsay,

Notice where I have it published, in our repo of Google Code Labs hosted on GCP using the link above, the video thumbnail shows up but the video will not play:
https://training.saucelabs.com/codelabs/Module1-Quickstart/index.html?index=..%2F..quickstart#1

The embedded video plays for me, using both my Google and personal gmail accounts. I'd suggest opening Chrome Devtools and seeing if you get a console error message when you try to play it.
