A session can be used however, it has to be saved in the database. Remember that in the use of the convensional session the "cookie" size is 4KB max but when using a database the usedata size is only limited by the field size which gives you the liberty to specify the data type for the userdata field. As long as the session is active the data is available afterwhich the "gabage collection"  function in CI cleans out the session table as well.
