I come in this manner to launch a complaint against the "Code For Freedom 2008-09 Contest" evaluation team, specifically against Mr. Tirthankar Das and Mr. Amit Saha.
Both names I could read several times while competing on CFF as both were my instructors.
My complaint is about the CFF participation certificates distribution process which I did not understand what parameters the evaluation team applied to select those teams which deserved or not a participation certificate.
I send a copy of this email to the Embassy of my Country in New Delhi as I am an International student. I will forward this email to other concerned institutions if required until I get my participation certificate.
I expect both institutions have legal ways and procedures to discuss this matter.
It's not only me who have the same feeling as I've discussed with some of my colleagues in this competition and they don't understand as well WHY WE DID NOT HAVE THE RIGHT FOR A PARTICIPATION CERTIFICATE. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF A PARTICIPATION CERTIFICATE AFTER ALL? DOES IT MEAN I HAVE TO OIL MY INSTRUCTORS??? I HAVE PARTICIPATED FOR MORE THAN SIX MONTHS ON THIS COMPETITION AND I HAVE MADE MY PROJECT TO THE FINALS I JUST DID NOT GET THE PRIZE. THEN WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PARTICIPATE?
I want to underline a fact, I don't believe it's Sun Microsystems' fault in this case but few people in-charge of this competition behaved quite improperly.
I'm taking this case to defend my rights and I want to let Sun knows what happened in the CFF 08-09.
Regards.

You are making a complaint inspite of not understanding the
parameters that determine whether a participant deserves participation
or not. That is not a good sign of things.

But I wish to explain one thing. A contest in software is
different from other kinds of contests. The point that software is
different from other things is the center of all the drive against
software patents and free software. So, as in other contests, the
argument that mere participation and submission of code need not be
the only qualification for obtaining a participation certificate.
Anybody can submit anything and say s/he had completed the
project. But, for a contest of this level, there are a lot of other
things to be considered before issuing a certificate. Please
understand that, participation in these contests should not be for the
sake of certificates, but for the sake of learning. If you had at
least learnt one new concept in these six months, then you have got
something more valuable than a mere participation certificate. Thanks
