Description: Link open source social media functionality to basic
sustainability activities such as conceptual diagrams and metrics.
Potential examples of functionality to build using an open source
content management (CMS):
1) Visualization module that allows a community member to build and
develop basic organizational charts or conceptual maps or diagrams
that visually show the inter-connections of their sustainability
issues (see Figure 1 for an example). The user could then connect that
organizational chart to their online social media profile and/or a
community profile, whereby the chart could be edited by other
community members.
2) Visualization module that allows a community member to define and
build their own metric of success in sustainability and connect that
metric to their social media profile and/or their community profile.
A user would have the ability to, for example, select the type of
visual display (e.g., x-y scatter plot of a trend line showing change
in environmental and/or socio-demographic conditions over time, or an
animated mapping interface showing change of conditions over time of a
community’s geographic area), a environmental data source(which is in
a xml or csv format) will be used in the display (e.g., allow users to
select data from drop down lists of possibilities), and who in their
social network has editing rights.
3) Connection between 1 and 2 above, whereby users might link an
entity (i.e., a box or a connector) from an organizational chart to a
metric; for example, a box labeled “increased sidewalk coverage along
the streets” as part of a community’s organizational chart on an issue
such as energy consumption might link to a metric on increased
walkability (see Figure 2 for an example of a metric).
4) Embedding environmental web services into an open source cms.
5) Mapping module/interface which can allow you to stream map data
into the cms interfaces dynamically.
We are also open to any other ideas or suggestions related to
environmental sustainability and/or open source content management
systems/frameworks.
Boundaries & Ideas:
1) For the development, we would recommend you use Drupal (http://
drupal.org/)
2) To install the web server on your system, we would recommend you
use XAMPP (
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html). This
also contains phpMyAdmin where you can configure your own database and
administration settings
3) Use Open source tools/Web Services or any libraries available for
free on the internet.
4) Use data from relevant available sources / providers.
