Fellow Hackfestees,

I took "Not a code hacker? No worries; all skill sets and backgrounds
are valuable!" from the Hackfest description at face value *eep* I'll
bring a background in cataloging and metadata, with a small but
growing understanding of how those things fit into the larger data
puzzle.

Can you recommend specific things I can do between now and Hackfest
that will help me prepare myself to be a useful participant?

Many thanks,
Linda

You should have taken that at face value, IMO! We all bring our own
skill sets.

I'd say you're prepared already. Just keep an eye on the hackfest
ideas page, maybe, and see how the ideas strike you. Could be you'll
find a project idea that aligns well with your interests. Or it could
be one idea surfaces an idea you've had tucked away in the corner of
your brain for a while.

Having someone with cataloging and metadata experience at the Hackfest
will be fabulous -- who knows, people might be competing for your
time. :)

Actually, for purposes of comparison, I just rediscovered the
references included in the original preconf proposal [1], i.e.: "Roy
Tennant's "Where Librarians Go To Hack" [2] and the page for the
Access 2010 Hackfest [3]."

I hadn't seen that post from Roy Tennant before, but it's pretty
inspiring. And reading through the Hackfest ideas for Access 2010
really made me wish I'd been there.

I don't know if this would appeal to other attendees, but, as a Solr/
VuFind enthusiast, one suggestion I have is to further develop Demian
Katz's WorldCat Terminologies recommender module [4] . For example,
find a way to filter out references to terms for which the local
library has no associated items (and thereby avoid blind alleys) or
even redirect users to an ILL request form.
