I have a friend who intends to purchase a new desktop PC to use with
Photoshop. He is not a MAC person.

Does anyone have recommendations for either specific computers or
specific configurations that will play nicely (and quickly) with
Photoshop? Not an idle question - my machine has 4GB of RAM and an i5
processor and sometimes runs excruciatingly slow when using Lightroom
and Photoshop.

Thanks!

I5 or I7 is a good choice..(I cannot recommend AMD processors as I don't know them) plus make sure you use Windows 7 64bit.. or you can't take advantage of the increased RAM... Doesn't matter PRO or Home Premium. Pro gives you better networking and Virtual Machines.. If you won't use that, go Home Premium. It's less expensive. I have an I7 860 (older version) and 8GB of RAM and unless I'm opening more than 15 photos.. PS CS5 and Lightroom 3 work great! I would also recommend a graphic card from AMD 5770 or better They are up to 59XX now.. obviously the newest is better, but more expensive.. if you go NVidia.. I can't make a recommendation there.. though compete with the 5770 and you'll have something good. AMD 5X70 is the lowest I would go.

Motherboards make a difference in the architecture.. ASUS and Gigabyte I can recommend. But if you're not building one, you don't get too much of a choice there. That might make an ASUS pre-built the best choice.. Though I think gigabyte offers desktops from their site.

Side note.. Windows 8 is on its way.. Don't know how soon you're looking to upgrade. Could be worth the wait, unless you're sticking with CS5 or less.

My two cents

I have an ASUS which is growing in popularity. Either i5 or i7 is a good choice for the processor, but I would recommend maxing out the ram at 16GB and photoshop should function nicely

Get an i7 with at least 12gigs of ram, win 7 pro 64 bit, a later model ASUS motherboard, and nVideo graphics for starters. I keep seeing reports that AMD graphics board drivers cause lots of problems. Other considerations include a solid state drive for Windows (fast startup) coupled with 1 or 2 large, fast hard drives. The increase in speed from an i5 to an i7 is substantial, but you probably don't need the latest and greatest.

I got a system configured with my choices from Microcenter for a very reasonable price. I built it, and its been running for a year and a half with no problems. If you don't want to build it, they will do it for you.
