I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good, affordable scanner for the purpose of scanning hundreds of family photos/negatives. I've  considered bringing them somewhere to have them scanned, but local options seem cost prohibitive and I'm apprehensive of mailing them anywhere (especially if they're going to end up being scanned overseas). Any input is appreciated!

I use an Epson Perfection V500 Photo unit that does the job. It also can scan slides and B&W/color negs. There is a program in the software pack that helps to clean up and repair old photos too. I'm not sure of the cost at the time but you can scout around to get the best price...Tiger Direct, NewEgg,. I'm sure you know the drill. My old scanner, another Epson, model 4960 also did a great job. New or used you should find either model or possibly a newer type that will do the job for you. I have great faith in Epson products. You might check on refurbished models at Epson too. I have bought refurbished with the year warranty and been satisfied with the product. If it has been refurbished through the manufacturer, you can't tell the difference from new.

Scanning slides yourself is very labor-intensive.  I don't know if your scanning will be an ongoing project or a one-time thing.  If it's a one-timer, take a look at scancafe.com.  With their current pricing $159 buys you digitization of 600 slides, shipping included.  The plus:  someone else does the work and gives you options as to how much work you want them to do.  The minus: I'd assume there's some risk in sending your irreplaceable slides to California for processing.

I agree with Becky on the software. I use photoshop for the same reason. I only mentioned it because I hadn't fully investigated the included software beyond a one time try, but knew that I could do the things I wanted with photoshop.

I, too, have the V700 and it is a work horse.  I got mine refurbished from the Epson site.  It was the best price a year ago.  I do not recommend the software that comes with it for clean up and restore as it blurred too much detail for me.  I use my Photoshop skills for that. If you don't on know Photoshop well, take the digital photo classes.

I have a really old slide scanner so can't advise on hardware, however I've been very happy with Vuescan software from http://www.hamrick.com . It works quite well and is reasonably priced ($80).

I have done upwards of 1000 slides through scancafe. Yes, it is nervous making, but they did an incredible job. Yes, there is a risk in sending slides anyplace, but I did not lose any, nor did they do a bad job on any scan, and some of the slides are from the early 50s. They, btw, are sent to California and then to the far East for the processing. Check their web site...they tell you exactly what the process is. I also found it useful to be able to edit from the computer and not pay for the images that turned out to be really bad once seen full screen. ( I believe that you can eliminate up to 20 % )
