Hi Group. Today for the fist time in 8 years I see a purple skin
coconut. Has anyone ever seen this? What causes it? Is the coconut safe
to eat? The water tastes normal, smells normal, and the meat tastes
normal. Just the color??

It appears to be a 10 month old coconut and it came from either a
Malayan Yellow Dwarf or Brazilian Green Dwarf.

attached are 2 fotos...

Thanks
Ron

Ron:

How much of your coconut population is like this purple?

Hello Ron,
Asked my wife Aore (born in Kiribati) had she seen purple flesh in coconuts. Aore said that her people sometimes bake coconuts with "rubbery" flesh on a stone oven and when the nut is opened the flesh has turned purple in colour. Perhaps your coconut had been exposed to strong sunlight or heat?
Cheers,
Don
