Hi,

I am looking for advice re. coconut farming in Ethiopia?  Has anyone experience or is aware of any such activity in the western parts of that country?  The latitude is fine, the weather and soils are fine, and the water resources also seem fine.  But I did not see any coconut palms!   I have been requested to help set up a coconut farm there, and have just returned from that country.

Regards,
David

I have not been beyond the international airport in Ethiopia, so I cannot help you directly.

I have seen coconuts growing on the coast of Djibouti and the north coast of Somalia. Somewhere I may have a report written in Italian about coconuts on the east coast of Somalia - I will try to find it.

In 1901 coconuts were taken to Uganda and subsequently reported to fruit "fairly well"  [
Thomas, A.S. (1940) Fruits and vegetables. Appendix In: Tothill, J.D. Agriculture in Uganda. OUP, p490].

In the 80s and 90s there was a Ugandan, Fred Opio, who worked with coconut when he was at the University of the South Pacific but I have no idea if he is still alive, let alone working on coconuts or in Uganda.

What altitude is the Ethiopian location and what are the winter temperatures?

Hugh
