Hi,
Can anyone please tell me what the volume of water available in various species of coconuts is? And what parts of India they are growing in?

I want to start a coconut water packaging plant and was wondering if there was any advice available in that direction.

Thanks,
Shravani

Shravani,

Hope you are in touch with CDB. We recently heard few locations in
Mysore apart from Pollachi in Tamilnadu are suitable for tender
coconuts.

We are assisting the budding and aspiring entrepreneurs in the coconut
industry. Please provide your business model and plans in the below
link at CoconutExperts website.

Dear Sekar,
The " deejay dwarf/tall" is a hybrid.  The "cod" is the Chaughat Orange Dwarf.   Can you confirm if the cod also has an yield of 450 to 550 ml of tcw?
Best,
David

One ton of desiccated is from 2.9 tons of meat, equivalent to 1.546 tons copra according to UCAP from roughly 16,000 nuts.

Milk is a much trickier question since you have free water and bonded water. From milk you get skimmed milk+cream+low fat desiccated. I need to work out exact figures again soon. Moreover, people add to the milk because it is too thick.

Vinay may be right when he says that there is no information about how many kg of desiccated coconut powder can be got from one ton of coconut in countries like India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines, Brazil and Thailand, but it is possible to make some general observations based on the differences or similarities between the local  tall varieties in those countries.

The liquid water content of the ripe nut and the residual moisture content of the fresh kernel are important factors in desiccated coconut production. There is a major difference in these values, between the the common tall types in India, Sri Lanka, and Brazil which are in the "wild-type" category and those in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines which are in the "domestic-type" category.

Both liquid- and residual-water content are higher in the domestic type coconut palm. So they require more drying and thus there will be a greater weight of DC from one ton of coconuts (with the husk removed) in India, Sri Lanka, and Brazil. Coincidentally, the oil content will also be greater.

But bear in mind that in all of these countries the local coconut populations may not only show a range of introgression between wild- and domestic types but will also include dwarf and hybrid types (that will have domestic-type water content).

It should be possible to calculate DC output using fruit component analysis data that has been collected by COGENT for the conserved germplasm collections.
