Dear Dr.Rajagopal
Thanks for marking copy of letter addressed to Dr.Bruce.At this point I would like to say that our claim is that antiviral anti bacterial properties of coconut to build immunity.  That  has been done. We have opened  up this for researchers .. Let us leave at this stage.Let us not link corona and coconut without clinical studies.. This is my personal view.

Hi Dr Bruce Fife,

Good evening. I have an important issue on corona for clarification

from you as an expert nutritionist and therapeutic treatment with experience

on coconut. Can monolaurin, rich in coconut, play any useful role with

appropriate combination with other medication? I found from your vast

publications on the anti viral properties of coconut and I did cite in my

review too, sent to you?  When the world is looking for ways and means

to fight the dreadful disease by corona, is my assumption about coconut

MCFA a fanciful expectation or has it any scientific basis to suggest to

medical fraternity and pharmaceutical sector?  I wish to get enlightened.

With warm regards,

Dr.Rethinam's stand appears to be the most appropriate one at the moment, based on clinical studies so far.

Dear Dr Rethinam et al
I concur that many are advantaged by immune boosting effects of coconut based diets and encouraging clinical research prior to linking to specific medical conditions. Bearing mind that "malicious" search algorithms seem to divert internet traffic from specific unsupported medical claims particularly with respect to neurodegenerative conditions.

monolaurin however is important to us all at the moment and whether, endogenous from mct consumption, or bio-available from fresh tender coconut. I do not see much mention of monolaurin content in coconut water since Dr Kabara's work, he has since gone on to commercialize lauricidin
I am not writing to promote the sale of packaged/preserved coconut water but to ensure the tender coconut street vendors healthy offering also attracts medical research funding and place in these times of dislocation and "self isolation"

Dear Colleagues,

I have often wondered whether local doctors are aware of local cures that are readily available.

With regard to the potential impact of coconut and coconut-products on health, a number of individuals in this network have come up with brilliant ideas but we need to go one step further and involve appropriate organizations and institutions. Discussions could be initiated by coconut institutions such as ICC (International Coconut Community) and involve research institutions (medical schools, universities etc), health organizations (WHO etc), and regions bodies (Pacific Community (SPC) etc)). What we should be aiming for is to see doctors (especially in coconut-growing areas) openly promoting and disseminating leaflets/ handouts on research-based information on how coconuts and coconut-based products could help various health issues.  If I am not mistaken medical doctors can only recommend cures recognized by their institution/organization.

A comment from ICC, other organizations/institutions or people in the medical profession will be gratefully appreciated.

Best wishes,
Nat Tuivavalagi (Agronomy Reseacher, College of Micromesia-FSM, Pohnpei, FSM)

PS: Research, development & extension on coconuts and coconut-products and their impact on health

In addition, I hope that ICC or coconut organizations of coconut growing countries could also identify (or help form) appropriate coconut bodies in coconut-importing countries for collaborative activities.

Cheers,
Nat
