Compare the food habits of US  ,China and many countries ha ong more COVOD 19 INCIDENCE and that of South India  .You will  get an idea by yourself.Kerala being an exemption that large  no.of people  working in many parts of the world in large numbers have returned ,many  have moved within state visiting relatives not folloeig quara tine procedures  before the state  could impose restrictions and Social distan e.Believe that coconut oil ,coconut milk coconut products will help tp build up resitance in the body.Just now  Puthia thalaimurai TV broadcasting Kerala stude ts from China is the first incidence.
We can go on arguing  but prime effort should be to slow down spread  by whatever means and  Coconut is one in the list.Dr.P.Rethinam Former CDB Chairman

Rajgopalji: My question was a layman's quesiton; as coconut oil is more common in the Diet in South India than it is in North India. May be to get all medical benefits, one may have to consume a lot more quantity than in usual diet.

Let me share one personal experience: When I traveled to Ghana and Nigeria, I saw a lot of neem trees. I recalled that in childhood we used to use neem tea whenver we were sick with fever/malaria (of course no test was done in the village). So I thought may be I can use neem tea (one cup every day in the morning) as malaria prophylaxis instead of chloroquin or mefloquin to avoid latter's side effects (especially nightmares). So I started doing it.

When I came back to DC, I asked a doctor (who was working at Georgetown uni) about the effectiveness of neem tea. She said: you have to consume a lot more (ton) of neem leaves to get the same benefit as you get from Mefloquin. Of course neem tea has other benefits.

So may be what you are saying is true; but the quantity needed may be lot more than what is consumed in daily diet or taken as supplement. Same is true for turmeric: to get its anti-inflamation benefits: Amount we use in daily diet is not enough!

Of course, when we were in India, we all had more immunity as Chandra says! Of course the environment we live in shapes our immune system as well.

Thank you. I am not an expert to answer precisely since my knowledge is only

to some extent on coconut but acquired on medicinal values. But, in general the

observation from our childhood in South is that food preparations with spices like

pepper, turmeric, cinnamom, jeera coconut, and other minor constituents in almost

daily food plates with carefully prepared cuisines. Our elders who were orthodox and

strict on food front, right from sitting posture to eating with hands, less or no talk, no

wastage etc helped us to maintain certain amount of discipline. Initial years of such

habit helped us to develop resistance or immunity, I believe to migrate to other places.

I was in Delhi for a decade, then Denmark, then in Kerala 26 years with least health

problem. I should not talk about food preparations and habits of other regions which do have

delicious foods, healthy and nutritious. In my opinion it is qualitative versus quantitative, use

of oil, mode cum time taken for preparation, serving time gap all seem to contribute to our

overall health indicated by digestive power and innate immune system. Sorry for this bla bla

narrative. Food odor, taste and preference environment seem to influence, as some rigid

south indians could not withstand chappatis/ rotis with chenna masala, they are not used to.

Hope this general observation is ok. But, coconut has universal appeal if one likes the taste

of any one or two of over a dozen raw or prepared products.

Dear all,

see my views on corona, posted in facebook: This is based on my comprehensive review for
over 60 years on coconut research across the world on nutritional and health benefits. It is
sent to some experts for comments and vetting before printing in leading journal.

NATURE'S GIFT TO FIGHT DISEASES: Be thankful to Almighty for providing gift to face
challenges. I wish to share some important scientific facts. Briefly, 'immunity' is the capacity
to resist or fight the disease causing organisms or toxins in the body. From childhood we are
blessed by way of Mother's milk which is rich in 'monolaurin' monoglyceride of lauric acid,
which has the potential to impart immune system. That is the reason why medical professionals
insist that breast milk from mother be fed for six months to one year so that the baby develops
immune system. This was proved in early years when children born were relatively healthy by
well nourished mother who could feed the child with milk for long. Elders of over 70 - 75 years
would would vouchsafe the above since they witnessed children in those days relatively healthy
due to mother's milk, as compared to later years when breast feeding declined which seems to
have resulted in children with poor immune system.

The only other source of 'monolaurin' in nature is coconut which is rich with an average of 50% lauric

acid,, a saturated fat but beneficial. Needless to mention then that coconut milk and products have

advantage of imparting immune system and promoting the same in human beings. This is the scientific

basis and not hearsay. If some data is available on the 'immunity development index' (IDI) with any health/

medical authorities in Kerala, which is a high coconut consuming State, my view point may be verified.

Eminent cardiologists/ nutritionists across the world recognized that coconut is a great boon to humanity.

My earlier post in facebook advocated coconut as a viable source for fighting corona in view of its antifungal,

antibacterial and antiviral properties. So, any medication with ayurvedic system based on coconut and hence

'monolaurin' might be a reasonably good proposition to minimize if not eliminate altogether corona attack.

Now what we need immediately is to enhance immune system in the patients exposed to corona and rescue

them. Therefore the focus must be to weaken the virus as fast as possible with strategies that need to be exploited.

Since monolaurin has the potential to destroy the membranes of cells of the virus, the possibility of it working well

cannot be ruled out. Let it be with a combination prescription by experts in medicine/ pharmacology and ayurveda.

This is my knowledge sharing approach to address the serious problem. Some of the above points were described

in my upcoming review on coconut health and nutrition benefits.
The above suggestion is worth consideration by the Govt.
Share and see this reaches PMO and Health ministry, ICMR and all concerned. That Philippines researchers also are

looking into coconut corona relationship is a positive sign towards addressing the pandemic.

This I consider my duty to help the Govt in a small way.
