Dear Colleagues,

The International Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT) includes now 39 country members. Up to now, only 23 countries have provided data on their genebanks. In 2012, the data was partially updated in the framework of the project ”Upgrading international coconut genebanks and evaluating accessions” funded by the Global Crop Diversity Trust and leaded by Bioversity International. In some cases, this table may not reflect today’s reality, as some of the countries did not update of the data during the last 10 years. The following lists are now available on the COGENT website at:

http://www.cogentnetwork.org/index.php/faq/139-coconut-germplasm-conserved-by-cogent

- 419 cultivars or varieties ranked by names of cultivars

- 419 cultivars or varieties ranked by countries of origin

- 855 populations ranked by names of cultivars and populations

- 855 populations ranked by countries of origin

- 1680 accessions ranked by names of cultivars and populations

- 1680 accessions ranked by sites of conservation (genebanks)

To better understand the terms cultivars, populations and accessions, please visit the dedicated Frequently Asked Question on this topic:

The Coconut Genetic Resources Database project (CGRD) was initiated in 1994. The project was funded by the French Government and implemented by the Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Developpment (CIRAD) in collaboration with COGENT member countries. Its objective is to facilitate data storage and exchange among the members of the COGENT network. This will enable coconut breeders and other users to access data on coconut cultivars. From January to April 2012, the data was updated for the following 6 countries: Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. We also received the data from some other countries but the data was not sufficiently standardized to be incorporated directly in the database.

Kind regards,

Dr Roland Bourdeix

COGENT Coordinator
