Dear Barrington,

You could look at the web site of the coconut development board of india http://coconutboard.nic.in/cdb4a.htm , they have descriptions and you can do an internet search. A word of caution, traditional commercial first grade activated carbon technology required a minimum of shells from 60 million coconuts per annum. India and China now offer plants that work on far lower capacity but I do not how good the output put is.

Next year there will be a coconut investment promotion in the Caribbean by the European Commission. What is financed will depend on who formulates that project later this year.

Good luck,

Hello,

For those who does not know me, I am an international researcher working in France, you can check my name on internet or see the links below.

We will have soon 200 to 500 coconut palms (dried leaflets samples) to analyse with 13 to 15 already known SSR markers.

Do you know a laboratory in your country wich could make such analysis, and how much it will cost ? we are looking for a reliable laboratory and cheaper costs than in France.

In the future, the number of palms to be analysed could extended to some thousands.

Kind regards

Dr Roland Bourdeix

Dear all,

In a classical coconut genebank, coconut varieties and populations are conserved as accessions, generally planted close together in the same fields. The lifespan of such accessions is only 25 to 30 years. After this period, most of the coconut palms reach 15 m high or more. At this stage, it becomes very difficult to make the requested controlled pollinations. It is therefore necessary to rejuvenate the accessions before the inflorescences become so inaccessible. In the African genebank, workers use costly triple ladders that can reach a height of only 14 meters. In some other places, like India or Indonesia, palms are climbed mainly manually which is very risky. Rejuvenation programmes require climbing roughly 75 palms each about 15-20 times. Basically, for rejuvenating an accession, the controlled pollinations are implemented over a 6-month period; the mature seednuts are harvested one year later, also over a 6-month period; then the old accession is removed from the field and replaced by a new one.

Alternatively, the coconut palms could be planted in geographical and reproductive isolation, as proposed in the Polymotu project (1). In this case, open-pollination can be used to produce true-to-type seednuts. Then, the constraints linked to the height and age of the palms are removed. Instead of climbing the palms for making controlled pollination, people only have to wait for the coconut to fall naturally to the ground. Thus, the same accession can be kept as long as a sufficient number of palms remain alive in the field. In most cases, the duration of a coconut accession will then be extended to 75 to 100 years, or even more. Even if some of the palms die, there is no need to remove the remainder as it is done in a classical genebank. Dead palms can be replaced by new ones, without removing the old palms remaining alive.

Extending the lifespan of a coconut accession from 25-30 years to 75-100 years or more represents a huge saving of time, manpower and money.

(1) for Polymotu project, see: http://polymotu.blogspot.com/. Polymotu concept is to use geographical and reproductive isolation to conserve and reproduce varieties of plants and trees. When a small isolated place is planted all with the same variety, the plants conserved there breed only within the same variety, and certified seed and seednuts can be produced at the lower cost. These isolated places can be small islands or small valleys; they can also be located in flat mainland, with landscaping designed to create pollen barriers.

Dear colleagues,

We obtained a first estimation of costs coming from Canada. This is for the analysis of 350 samples of palms leaflets with 15 SSR markers:

Task             Quantity    Cost/unit        Price USD

DNA extraction   350         2.50             875.00

Genotyping       5250        1.35             7087.50

Data management  4           150.00           600.00

Total                                         8562.50

So this is about 25 USD per coconut palm plus shipping. Do you know any reliable lab with cheaper prices?

Kind regards

Roland

Dwear Roland,

There is a place in ICRISAT, India for commercial genotyping and the cost is very low. Pl. contact Dr. Senthilvel. I have copied this to him also.
