Deal all,

Welcome to the last day of workshop in this boiling summer! Today I would like to have your final remarks and ideas about the topics we discussed last week in particular:

  1. Analysis of the Metadata tools
  • Any problem with MIKADO – Please let us know if you had any problem with MIKADO
  • Final schema of metadata flow, and way of data submission to Devrim
  • Metadata final structure and name of Metadata
  1. UML Schema and INSPIRE structure analysis  - please try to finalize the analysis of your schema especially for WP 3-4-5-6  in order to be able to create the final COCONET
  1. Data flow SCHEMA  - finalize the best way of exchanging data. This is crucial to really populate the GEODATABASE.

GIS SUMMER SCHOOL

Next summer Bella suggested to organize  GIS summer school to train people on GIS

Probably the school will be in COSTANZA, but we need still to organize everything

Me and Devrim will be available for teaching, but we need some more volunteers to help us with studentsand assist them during the school.

I was thinking to a group of maximum 25 studens

Please let me know you opinions and ideas!

GIS group:

Please find below the GIS group and contact person we identifies in LECCE;

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE WILL BE INVOLVED!

Dear Fedrica, dear Oltion , dear all,

Yes, this is a boiling summer. At our place it is 38 degrees.

First of all, we would like to support  the  proposal  of  Oltion on Friday (5 Day).  But at the same time we are noting that there may be some difficulties in the exchange of spatial data.  There are  spatial data that  consist of more than one file, such as  Arc / Info binary grids, shapefiles,  geortiffs, etc. They are representing not just     file, but a file set. This feature must be considered when creating a search engine of the proposed database for data exchange. Further on there can be some   confusion  due to human factor. The output, which we see as an opportunity for exchanging   spatial data are such tools as ArcCatalog. For those who do not have the ability to use ArcCatalog, we offer GeoServer. The use of  these  tools excludes  the possibility of mistakes in the exchange of spatial data.

In   short,  work with ArcCatalog. One must create an empty database ArcSDE, exclusively reserved to share spatial data. The  structure  of  such  database may be very simple. The name of the database can correspond with the work packages. The sub  directories  correspond  to  the names of organizations that communicate within this WP . There may be other options. To share any other information we  can  use  the  framework,  that is proposed by Oltion.

We will propose some options to the Analysis of the Metadata tools  during the day.

Dear Richard abd GIS team,

I would like you to focus especially on the UML Schema and INSPIRE structure analysis.
As soon as we will get the attributes from WP3, 4, 5, 6, you can start revising the UML schema, producing the .xml for each WPs

About the data sharing, what I would like to create is a place where very easely peaple can load their GIS data and then the GIS group can revise and harmonize the data.

I was originally thinking to a ftp site with proper folders because it seems to me the easiest way! There is no need to load directely in the data in the geodatabase, it is not possible. The GIS group must revise and harmonize the data, we can't ask partners to do this job.  Maybe a friendly interface to sumbit data directely in the proper folder can be a nice options.
What do you think about?

Dear all,

Please check the metadata flowchart. What i suggest, the partners --> WP GIS contacts --> WP9 (IMS-METU) --> Seadatanet NODCs.

For the submission of metadata, i think ftp is the best solution.

To prevent the confusions, i suggest to give unique names to data and related metadata. To do this, we can add wp numbers and partner numbers as suffix. For example,

P04_WP04_

P29_WP10_

or

WP05_P06_

What do you think?

Dear Devrim

I forward your message to my colleague
Sissy Iona (I think you know her)
and she will replay to your message.
She will manage Coconet metadata.

dear devrim and dear all,

please have a look to this metadata standard suggested by Alessandro Sarretta

Dear Devrim,

I think that metadata flowchart you suggest is good.
And as I suggested earlier our oganization as a
Activity center for Pollution Monitoring and Assessment
could serve a role NODC for UKrainian organizations.

Best regards,
Anna

Hello everybody,

The metadata flowchart proposed by Devrim sounds good for me.

Concerning the way of submission for metadata, for the WP3 we have used so far ftp and a drop box to send publication to Coralie so she can realize a synthesis. I am not an internet or data exchange expert but the Oltion's proposal seems really interesting but may be complicated and too long to create. I think a simplest way of exchange data will be the best considering the quantity of data to transfer and the high number of partners within Coconet. So for me using ftp is probably the easiest way.

I am finishing the UML schema for the WP3. I will send it later in the afternoon.

Dear Anna,

The NODCs are already defined in seadatanet project. The Seadatanet NODC of Ukrain is MARINE HYDROPHYSICAL INSTITUTE - UKRAINIAN NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (MHI-DMIST), UKRAINE.

But if you want you can help us to organize the Ukrainian partners metadata and to send to MHI.

Thanks

Devrim

Dear Federica, dear Devrin,

Yes of coarse we will focus especially on the UML Schema and INSPIRE structure analysis. And as soon as we will get the attributes from
WP3, 4, 5, 6, we will  start revising the UML schema, producing the .xml for each WPs.

But as we are also involved in WP9 task 9.1 as partner we would like to make some suggestions :
During the Workshop  considerable attention was paid for Mikado and standards developed and implemented within SeaDataNet.

UkrSCES during 2005-2011 was  involved in 2 projects BS "SCENE", UBSS and has extensive experience in using the software to prepare  metadata files and implementing  data exchange with SeaDataNet.  On our servers  DM (Download Manager) is deployed, which is constantly  in  on-line and is monitored by specialists  of SeaDataNet. Data from our online UkrSCES database «SeaBase» are prepared in ODV (CDI), and constantly are  ready for exchange.

Thus, given our experience, we offer our services in terms of consultation on the preparation of metadata files and the use of software «MIKADO» and placing of the participants data of the COCONET project data on our servers. We can also serve as it was proposed in the WP9 Report being  a Regional Activity Centre for Pollution Monitoring and Assessment for the Black Sea Region for these porposes also.t

With kind regards

Richard

Dear Federica
We agree with your proposal. Actualy there is no matter for us what interface will be used for data excange. The most important is that this mechanism has to be easy, user friendly, convenient for all COCONET participants.

The O&M - Observations and Measurements is also an ISO standard (ISO 19156: http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_catalogue/catalogue_tc/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=32574).
It has been widely used in the INSPIRE data specifications that have data observed and measured (Geology, Ocenographic Geographical Features, Atmospheric Conditions and Meteorological Geographical Features, ...) and is also quite important to connect data with sensors, instruments, etc. (Environmental Monitoring Facilities).
The O&M standard is very generic, so a discussion group have worked to tailor the O&M principles into the INSPIRE frameworks. A document has been produced to guide this process and to explain the principles applied in the various INSPIRE Themes. Unfortunately I only see in the INSPIRE website an old version of this document (http://inspire.jrc.ec.europa.eu/index.cfm/pageid/241/documentid/2633) that is qute outdated. I'll ask to JRC about this...
If you have any questions on this topic, I can try and answer ...

Dear Richard and all,

I would be very happy to share my responsibilities:)

If you agree, we can establish a metadata support group (MetSG) to provide help to coconet
partners to create the metadata files:

Anna
Richard
Devrim
Federica (as always:)

Anyone else?

Dear all,

I want thanks for your availabilty, I think the MetSGis a good idea. I realized many peaple need help for Metadata.

Devrim we can continue working with a Google group dedicated to metadata for all partners, like on line assistence :-)
