I've just (well, earlier today) uploaded three pictures of a mask I
made. My inspiration was a traffic light that you can only see when
you are in a direct line with it. The construction of it is pretty
obvious: an aluminum flange with a section of car radiator duct-taped
to the front of it. As you can see, it gives me an extremely narrow
field of vision. Worn in conjunction with ear plugs, it is quite an
isolating experience. Going for a walk in the woods is a formidable
challenge.

The army-surplus snorkel hood is not what holds it in place, by the
way. There is an inner hood made of denim, secured with velcro and
lined with coconut-fiber matting. The same hood is seen in the
"Dangerous Parka" picture. I was lucky enough to get a hold of two of
those aluminum flanges. They're at least 50 years old. I have no idea
where you could find more of them.

If you look at the picture of me wearing it, it sort of suggests a
solar eclipse. The fake fur trimming looks like a corona. I'm tempted
to go out and buy a new one of those hoods so the trim is all white
and fluffy. Then I'd take a picture of me wearing it with the lid in
place. The lid is a black rubber or plastic cap intended to cover the
end of a pipe. It's secured with an oversized radiator-hose clamp.
With the lid screwed tightly in place, I'm in total darkness. With
earplugs it's a total sensory eclipse.

I've added some refinements since then. I put a second piece of radiator over the first one, positioned 90-degrees from the other one, so that my field of vision is a tiny citcular area. The mask now fastens directly to my coconut-mat hood, and I wear it with my snug-fitting doormat doublet. My sleeves are also lined with the stuff.

Here's looking at you! Not really. Even at this angle I wouldn't see you, so narrow is my field of vision.
