The composition of the resin is, by far, the most closely-guarded secret ot the
Wetwi. In it lies their power. The resin's inventor occupies case number one.
Even its properties are known to only a few. This is no mere epoxy, whose only
function is to harden. Were that so, the victim would be dead even before the
lid was sealed in place.
The resin could almost be said to have a life of its own, rhough not a
conscious one. That life is totally dedicated to preserving the life, and the
consciousness, of its vicim.
Actually, let us not say victim. He is a victim for only the briefest
moment in time, memorable as it is; while he is being wrapped. Henceforth and
for all time, he has a new identity. He is the mummy. Please don't call him The
Mummy, though. That is the title of a motion picture. How inappropriate.
Over time, the resin releases oxygen to sustain the mummy's life. Not
too much, just enough. The mummy is allowed to accumulate an abundance of
carbon dioxide in his lungs, insuring proper blood circulation to the skin, so
it will be the perfect medium through which to absorb the oxygen. If the mummy
tries holding his breath in an attempt to end his prolonged life, it will do
him no good. The resin also releases enough glucose to sustain heart and brain
function, and to provide energy for the occasional futile struggle. Also energy
for the eye muscles, as there will definitely be periods of rapid eye movement.
The resin also releases alkali,as needed, to neutralize the acids inevitably
generated by metabolic processes.
Thus encased, the mummy will remain alive for years, if not centuries.
The Committee is fulfilling a mandate given to its forebears, time out of mind.
It doesn't really know what it is doing. Criteria were established long ago, as to whom
will be honored with the act of mummification. It may not be perceived as an honor by
either Committee or victim, but it is an honor all the same.
Every concentrated mind added to the collection of mummy cases on the shelves
adds more mass. Soon critical mass will be achieved, and the chain reaction will begin.
The groupthink of such bodies as the Committee is no match for such a force.
