Thanks for joining the Group. One of the objectives of creating the group was to put pressure on the Mayor and the Police Department and take cases of harassment seriously. To this end we need to get at least 100 + members in the group ASAP. So please inform your friends and send me their contact info so that I and send them an formal invite.

Thanks Priya.

We appreciate the assistance that SAALT has provided with this and other cases in NJ. Through the Citizens of Old Bridge Group we have embarked on an experiment as to how best to deal with incidents such as these. I believe that there are many learning lessons from this incident that will be helpful to the South Asian as well as larger American communities we live and work in. I will be sharing our experiences with you in the weeks and months ahead.

Sudeep – my name is Priya Murthy and I am the Policy Director of South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT). We are a national non-profit organization that works on immigrant and civil rights issues affecting the South Asian community. Although we are currently in transition regarding staff, we will soon have a new New Jersey Policy and Outreach Consultant in the area as well.

 

We have been in touch with Suresh regarding this case and provided some resources for the family through him as they are going through this difficult time. I also wanted to let you know of a few recent actions that we have taken in the case:

 

·       Submitted a letter (attached) to Prosecutor Kaplan and Mayor Phillips urging a robust prosecution of the case and filing of hate crime charges, if supported by the facts, particularly in light of the recent history of racial harassment of South Asians in Old Bridge.

·       Encouraging community members to send their own messages to the prosecutor through our online action system, which is available here: http://bit.ly/94VHDd.

·       Informed Dept. of Justice Civil Rights Division in DC and the Community Relations Service division regarding the case

·       Alerted community members regarding the case in our NJ e-newsletter and will be sending an action alert in the coming days.
