Varied Thrush

The male Varied Thrush is currently on the south bank of Clear Creek opposite the library just west of downtown Golden.

At 11:30 a.m., it was directly across Clear Creek from the library, either within 3' of the creek or actually walking on the ice close to the bank. Look for leaf litter being thrown in the air. This is a hard working, blue-collar bird!

Observed this bird initially under the footbridge just west of the library in Golden at 9:30 am. Watching it, I noticed it was holding it's beak open most of the time, as if it was a bird experiencing a hot day, even though it was only 45 degrees Fahrenheit. I also noticed the feathers on the left side of it's head above the eye were disturbed, looking like an injury. See close-up pics. Otherwise, seemed to be getting around ok and feeding. That's odd, because the Varied Thrush I saw in El Paso County last month had a minor disturbed area on the RIGHT side of its head. Definitely not as bad, but noticeable.
