DFO Trip - Apex Park, Jefferson County, Colorado
7 May 2017
0515 - 0645
0700 - Noon
Eight DFO members walked/hiked up the Apex trail and a little bit onto the Enchanted Forest Trail this morning. We managed to avoid the bikes, dogs, and even stay on our feet amid the rocks and slippery dirt. We feel just short of reaching 50 species for the trip, but some of the highlights were Virginia's Warbler, Black-headed Grosbeak, hawks, Spotted Towhees, and my personal favorite, a flyover cormorant.
The Lazuli Buntings were very vocal and active, and we were never too far away from seeing or hearing a corvid. It is a busy location with the non-birding activity, but it is still an under birded spot. Nuthatches feeding young and a FOY Bullock's Oriole were nice to see also.
