All,

After having only 5-6 House Finches and a pair of loyal flickers at my feeders since the late-Sept 16+” of rain that I got just north of Golden, I finally have lots of birds in this past week’s storm and today.  I just counted ~50 juncos of all but white-winged subspp, a few House Finches, and for the first time in 5.5 winters here in Golden, 3 Tree Sparrows coming to feed for the last 3 days.

I read with interest Bill’s president’s column in the latest Colorado Birds about the dearth of small birds since the rains and Steve Jones’s article in the Boulder County Nature Assoc newsletter.  Life with hardly any birds at my feeders for 4 mo in the fall/early winter for the first time in my life has been spooky and depressing.  I have visited with other birds who have had the same situation.  Hope the affected spp can reproduce and re-establish their populations this spring.

I also just photographed a lovely adult Sharp-shinned Hawk sitting in my tree; first time I have seen it in a couple months!  My feeders were empty while she was there!

Kay and all,
Though we didn't have the devastation that your area did with the flood, all winter we have consistently had lots of house finches, 3-4 tree sparrows every day, juncos of all races (no white winged) all the time, and many American goldfinches also all winter.  This mixed in every day normally with a huge family of flickers (maybe 6 or so), 2 blue jays, 2-3 Steller's jays, house sparrows, a Downy woodpecker, an occasional WB nuthatch, a family of rabbits, and 3-4 squirrels, and all those doves, there is quite the activity to watch all winter.  Don't despair, we have seemingly the same number of birds as other years.  But this is the first time we have had the Steller's.
