Norma Verhoeff and I did some birding today around Prowers and Bent.  Although the temperature reached 86 degrees and there were strong winds S-SE around 3 p.m., we did have some good birds and here are the highlights.

Lamar Community College and Private Property (Prowers County)

Broad-winged Hawk (1)
Swainson's Thrush (4)
Hermit Thrush (1)
Spotted Towhee (1)
Wilson's Warbler (1)
MacGillivray's Warbler (2) adult male (1 private property)
Yellow Warbler (5)
Common Yellowthroat (1) female (private property)
Northern Cardinal (3) males
Western Tanager (1) adult male (private property)

Thurston Reservoir (Prowers County)

Numbers of waterfowl down considerably, although 2 Spotted Sandpipers persist at the boat ramp.

Lower & Upper Queens and Neenoshe Reservoir (Kiowa County)

Only had brief visits to each.  The large numbers of waterfowl and shorebirds have left Neenoshe although we did add Stilt Sandpipers (FOY) found with Long-billed Dowitchers.

Melody Tempel Grove (Bent County)
Strong winds and temperatures in the high 80's until the latter part of the visit around 4:15 p.m.

Broad-tailed Hawk (1)
Least Flycatcher (1)
Wood Thrush (1) west of CR 35
Gray Catbird (1)
Ovenbird (1) heard only
American Redstart (1) adult male
Yellow Warbler (5)
Townsend's Warbler (1)
Wilson's Warbler (1)
Spotted Towhee (1)
Very feisty Bullsnake (1)

Gale Tempel, owner of Melody Tempel Grove has cold water and other beverages in a container near the granite bench for birding visitors.  We welcomed the refreshment on a hot day.

Thank you.
