COBirders,

About 20 minutes ago I heard a familiar call in the sky while in my back yard.  I looked up and confirmed a solitary Common Nighthawk.  When growing up over 60 years ago in the Midwest large flocks of this species were ubiquitous.  The booming of their wings was quite distinct and I believe most rural people recognized what many of them called “bull-bats”.  They were also fairly common 35 years ago in Pueblo and Custer counties.  Now, unfortunately, hearing/seeing one gives me a pang of nostalgia and the urge to report it to COBirds.

Check mate-about the same time, dusk, I also heard the call of Common Nighthawk here in Canon City and I had 3 of them.  Like Leon I find it sad to see and hear so few of these birds anymore.

I had a single bird "peent" twice then move on in northern Fort Collins last night while eating dinner on the patio... the same sentiment as Leon. Whats happening? Are this birds about to disappear?

It would be interesting to see if it's a localized phenomenon.  We have many Common Nighthawks at the Central Plains Experimental Range (Weld Co.) right now, and they are quite active even during the middle of the day.  Just yesterday, we paused field work to watch a pair in courtship flight.  We frequently see them perched on fence posts, and we flush them while rope-dragging (though we haven't found a nest yet).  That being said, I have no idea how many there were here in the past.  Perhaps they are less numerous here than they used to be, and they just seem common in comparison to other locations.

Incidentally, there were numerous Common Nighthawks sighted in Salida during the CFO Convention - flying over our hotels at night, etc.

In the past --

In the 1960s, Common Nighthawks were abundant. They would fly around all intersections in Boulder along 28th St. (Then the by-pass) like swallows do now. Even 20 years ago, they were a lot more common than in the last few years.

Their scarcity this year is frightening. I have only seen two in the Louisville area even though I have been out in good habitat at dusk.
