Special CFO trip

While winter birds are still showing up, before long the dreaded birding doldrums will be here. But wait, there is hope beyond. One of the interesting thoughts is for Colorado-bound birders to strike out for new pastures, or, rather, seas.
Our partner WFO’s annual convention is in northern California at the height of fall migration down the west coast. Not only will participants be viewing puffins, albatrosses, and Wandering Tattlers, they will be seeking Asian strays, like stints. The convention is September 28 through October 2 in Fortuna, California. It will feature customized pelagic trips (auklets, jaegers and skuas, Oh my!), plus excellent workshops and field trips to target endemics of the area. The coastal field trips will be finding Black Oystercatcher, Black Turnstone, Surfbird, and Pelagic & Brandt’s Cormorants. I urge you to seriously consider a fun time with great birders.
In addition, CFO and WFO are working on a joint trip prior to the convention. Jon Dunn (remember his skill and humor at the 2014 CFO Sterling convention) has offered to lead a pre-convention trip from Sacramento, California to convention headquarters. Jon will seek birds that would be in addition to west coast specialties unlikely to be seen at the convention—such as Bell’s Sparrow, California Thrasher, Mountain Quail, California Quail, Wrentit, Red-Breasted Sapsucker, White-Headed Woodpecker, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Yellow-billed Magpie, California Towhee, and Tricolored Blackbird. Are any of these birds lifers for you? All of them? The trip, which also might include a pelagic expedition, will be limited to 7 participants.
