 Join DFO and renowned author and birder Kenn Kaufman for this fascinating look at bird migration. In North America north of the Mexican border, most bird species are migratory to some extent, but there is a huge amount of variation in the routes and timing of their travels. Some species may move only a few miles between their breeding and wintering ranges, while others travel from the Arctic to the edge of the Antarctic. Some travel thousands of miles and then arrive with pinpoint accuracy at the same territory every year. Others are nomadic, seldom returning to the same place twice.

Very few birds actually migrate straight north in spring and straight south in fall. Their routes of travel may take them in any direction, and some migration takes place on every day of the year. This program, heavily illustrated with photos and maps, will feature species from a wide variety of bird families, revealing some overall patterns in the remarkable twice-yearly journeys of these small travelers.

As a teenager in the 1970s, Kenn Kaufman hitchhiked all over North America in pursuit of birdre later chronicled in his cult-classic book Kingbird Highway. After several years as a tour leader, he transitioned to a career as a writer, editor and illustrator.

Most of Kenn’s energy these days goes into book projects and painting bird portraits. He has written a dozen books, including seven titles in his own Kaufman Field Guides series. His other books include Lives of North American Birds, Flights Against the Sunset, and the latest, A Season on the Wind: Inside the World of Spring Migration, published in 2019. Kenn is a field editor for Audubon, a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society, and the only person to have received the American Birding Association’s lifetime achievement award twice.
