I'm filling in for Meredith today, on what was a fairly typical mid-October day at the Barr Lake banding station. We did have a 10am burst of about 20 White-crowned Sparrows (all Gambel's and nearly all young) that bumped up our numbers for the day. We had two returns from prior seasons, a Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow from 2023 and a Song Sparrow from 2022. We also saw and heard 2 Evening Grosbeaks way above our nets in the cottonwood canopy; we didn't catch them but they would be a first for the station if they come down low into our nets in the upcoming final week.
Here's the totals for our 29 newly banded birds (+ 2 returns) on the day:
White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's) - 25 + 1 return
Song Sparrow - 1 return
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon) - 2
Dark-eyed Junco (Unspecified, but mostly appeared Cassiar) - 1
We are open Tuesday through our final day on Friday, October 23rd, weather permitting. Most weekday mornings there is a visitor session from 8 to 9 a.m. Reservations are needed;
here is the link. Come visit during our final week of banding!
