I'm not sure how unusual it is, but at least 2 RBNUs have returned to my feeder in the last week, possibly more.  They seem to be coming and coming to the feeder, but never more than 2 at once.  We've also had a WBNU, apparently in the same time period.   Both species are regulars in my yard for much of the year, but breed elsewhere apparently.

I am located just south of Cherry Creek State Park. I have had RBNU's
visiting my yard all year. Two have been especially regular visitors this
summer. On July 2, I had an adult feeding 2 fledglings. I am assuming
that they nested nearby, because their visits were so frequent. According
to my records, RBNUs were around last summer as well, but not as regularly.

Last year (2016) I had some well into the summer, and thought they had nested; none this summer.

I had a few pygmy nuthatches earlier this month on the same days that everyone was first reporting them.

It seems, as the urban ornamental conifer resource matures, RbNuthatch is getting more widespread at low elevation as a breeder (widespread in Ft Collins, local in Greeley, rarely in Lamar, probably other places) and at this time of year they certainly show up all over the eastern plains. I made an distinctly unsuccessful run yesterday and today for the swallow-tailed kite in my second home of Lamar. As a very minor consolation to not seeing the kite, I had red-breasted nuthatches in three locations down there. (Other consolations were a roadrunner at Parkview Elementary (same school that once had one of the few CO records of 9-banded armadillo) just north of the Willow Creek Park swimming pool, red-headed woodpeckers and a bunting (never could see it), both at the north end of the park. [There are at least two families of northern cardinals at the LCC Woods (and chiggers)].
 
 
There seems to be a good dispersal of pygmy nuthatches to lower elevation this year, too. Several have been reported in the Denver area and I have had them at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins for the last two weeks.

This morning at about 8:15 I found this crested caracara perched in a dead
cottonwood along the Highline Canal in the Sunshine Acres area to the south
and east of Chatfield State Park. It stayed put for 25 minutes and then
took off towards the park in a north by northeast direction. Went into the
park with Diane Roberts hoping to relocate the bird but we were
unsuccessful.

This morning I was forwarded nice photos of a Crested Caracara reported
from the Highline Canal near Wildlife Way, outside the south border of
Chatfield State Park. This is a tad north and east of the pond where the
Trumpeter Swan spent a few months this past winter. The bird was last seen
a couple hours ago flying towards Chatfield SP, but am unsure of direction
of flight, i.e. north towards the model airplane field and the open land
there or towards the Gravel ponds on the Jeff Co side of Chatfield.
 
I haven't heard if it has been relocated or not and don't have any more
details at this point, but I wanted to pass along the information. Please
post success or failures in any searches!
 
I don't have permission to share photos at this point.

Follow up. The info I got suggested it flew north from the model airplane field and it was not seen again via several folks that searched this morning and afternoon. I think the bird was seen before 8-830 am this morning and not since.

Tim Ryan who works at Reuter-Hess Reservoir in Parker saw the Caracara
circling the dam about 10:45 this morning. He did not have
binoculars with him at the time so is going by shape. Reuter-Hess is about
13 miles south of Chatfield. Reuter-Hess is restricted access so
you need permission to enter.

The bird was seen again this morning by several birders (incl me) but hasn't been very cooperative overall. A number of us are still at the Willow Creek parking lot, but the kettle activity seems to be diminishing at the moment.

The DFO Field Trip for Saturday, August 26 will be to Guanella Pass led by

The DFO Field Trip for Saturday, August 26 will be to Cobb Lake, Timnath
Reservoir and Lory SP led by Francis Commercon (siskinbyderailleur AT
gmail.com; 303-470-9130) Meet at 0700 in the SW corner of the Moby Arena
Parking Lot on the CSU campus, Fort Collins. Will try to carpool to
minimize the number of cars. From Denver, take I-25 north to Prospect
Road, exit 268. Drive west on Prospect until you turn north on Shields
St., Then drive to Elizabeth St where you will turn east directly into the
Moby Arena Parking Lot. State Parks pass required. Will begin at Cobb
Lake SWA then transition to Timnath Reservoir, have lunch at Lory SP. Trip
will conclude mid-afternoon. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and
lunch. Bring good walking shoes and long pants. Register online or
contact leader.
