This is the first time I can remember when hot temperatures did not seem to have much impact on bird numbers - even with an early close of many nets (those most in the sun) we managed to catch 65 new birds. Wilson's Warblers, not surprisingly, continue to dominate:
Downy Woodpecker 2
Western Wood-pewee 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 4
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 4
Townsend's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 2
Wilson's Warbler 43
Western Tanager 1
Spotted Towhee 1 (FOS, and a very young bird)
Chipping Sparrow 3
Song Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
We are open 6 days a week (closed Monday), weather permitting through October 14. We are opening nets at 6:30 and should have birds back at the station by 7:15. We will close most days by about 11:30, earlier this week because of the heat. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.
Come visit!
