Hey COBirders,
Today was decidedly slower than yesterday for migrants, few were seen in the foliage, and fewer were caught, but today was “returning breeders day”. I had 10 returning local breeders banded in previous years all show up for the first time today, including a catbird and Yellow Warbler banded on the same day - 8/2/14. What are the odds? Three of the recaptures were “foreign” in that somebody else banded them. One was from Dave Elwonger, 1/2 mile down the creek, but the other two are still unknown.
It had the feel of “move-in day” at college - all of these different species had been all over the hemisphere, but show-up back here on the same day. Also like college, the girls showed up together, too. Four female Com Yellowthroats today, 2 new, 2 Returns, but the first females of the season.
Returning banded species - Yellow Warbler, Com Yellowthroat, YB Chat, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Red-winged Blackbird, Spotted Towhee. New birds - Lazuli Bunting (SYm), Lincoln’ Sparrow, Downy Woodpecker (ASY f), and a female Black-chinned Hummingbird, netted but not banded.
What will tomorrow bring? This is great!
