RUFF at Timnath Reservoir-Larimer County

All,

First, thanks to Nick K for getting the word out about the Ruff.  Not a bad bird to make you feel rewarded for being out on a morning like this rather than feeling somewhat silly and nuts.  I guess the truth is I feel both.   I have listed below my Ebird checklist that has the photos I was able to obtain.  Not great, but identifiable.  The wind was howling pretty good so keeping my hands steady with my phone over my scope wasn't easy.  And my phone kept shutting off due to the cold.   The FOCO mob is headed out to find it as far as I can tell and they have better cameras than I do.  Hopefully, someone gets better shots. Sanderling was another good bird.  I also refound the Mourning Warbler and American Redstart that Nick K and Joe K found at Timnath yesterday.   If anyone tries for this bird, please allow it some space.

For those of you who wish to look for the reported Ruff, here are some notes on accessing Timnath Reservoir. The town park at south end (accessed from CR-40) is posted “permit only” but FC Audubon has negotiated for birder access. The puddle hosting the Ruff is not visible from the park, and requires a 20-30 min hike. 

A better option is to park in the Wildwing neighborhood. Access from CR1 (aka Weld CR13). Drive as far west as possible where construction of houses has not yet started. Here you can walk along north shoreline to the “shorebird puddle” in 10 minutes.  

Please do not flush this bird for photography.

Update: ruff is currently not being seen. I suggest checking other parts of Timnath Rez and other shorebird locations further south.

Any updated sightings/opinions/photos from boots on the ground?  Deb gets off work at 2:30, and we're trying to decide whether to brave afternoon rush hour to chase.
