Learn about plans for wildlife crossings along Highway 36 between
Boulder and Lyons from project leader, Boulder County Parks and Open
Space (BCPOS) wildlife biologist Susan Spaulding. In her current
position as BCPOS Environmental Resources Specialist, Susan is developing a
program focused on
multi-jurisdictional collaborative projects, such as beaver habitat
enhancements and beaver reintroductions, Preble’s meadow jumping mouse
Federal Recovery Plan implementation, and wildlife crossings on US 36
and
Highway 128.
Boulder County has been concerned about the safety of the public and the
wildlife along Highway 36 between Boulder and Lyons, where 40% of all
wildlife collisions in the entirety of Boulder County occur. BCPOS and
CPW have been tracking elk and deer movements, and
CDOT has highlighted this stretch as having a high need for
mitigations. Susan will discuss the progress of this project, including
wildlife and safety data, public involvement, and potential crossing
structures for elk, deer, and smaller animals such as coyotes, rabbits,
turtles, and snakes.
Prior to Susan's talk,
Alexander Howard,
2024 recipient of a
BCAS teen scholarship to the Coastal Maine Bird Studies for Teens
Program at Hog Island, will talk for about ten minutes about his
experiences at the birding camp.
