Hi cobirders! Recovering from a illness Wednesday my son took me birding Sunday afternoon in the Boulder area. We arrived at South Mesa
Trailhead parking lot and went to the east end where there is a trail to 6 picnic tables. This area has a great variety of trees and understory and lower bushes. Popular with a variety of birds.
It was 2PM I set up on my rollatdor and son Bob manned the telescope and heard birds. I soon saw a pair of House Wrens that were feeding young
out of sight. A Lesser Goldfinch showed up on the ground near the closest Picnic table she was gathering nesting material and soon the male showed up also. A Western Wood Pewee came on a dead branch nearby giving great looks. A female Bullock's Oriole flew into tree in front of me. Much
later the male came there too. One Cedar Waxwing ,very colorful came to a branch to the left for many good looks. We moved to the next area. Here
were at least two noisy Gray Catbirds but they stayed in the background for a long time allowing only glimpses. A pair of Yellow Warblers wers here
came and went.
We moved up the road to Eldorado Mountain Park Set up near the start . Bob could hear a Lazuli Bunting near. It flew across the wide ravine up into a mature Ponderosa Pine on the ridge to the east. I soon found it in the telescope and watched it sing from the spot it selected.
Next we went to Eldorado State Park in the first big park lot we watched White-throated Swifts then and later again on way out. The next lot was at
the visitor Center. The picnic area was closed due to earlier flooding. They did have a Hummingbird feeder near the building and a huge Pine tree.
20 or more hummers came and went all Broad-tailed. A pair of Western Tanagers moved about he pine trees and I finally got great looks at the
male too! Only other birds I saw there was a Robin which briefly landed on the handicap parking sign.
At Chautauqua in Boulder Bob found the Indigo Bunting there. On top of an understory tree I got the scope on it and got great views of it munching
on flower seeds at top where it perched for quite awhile. It was the only bird new for the year for Bob . Always a great year bird.
We saw a male Bobolink north of Baseline before heading to Bob's place for supper on the deck and home by 9PM .
Great birding Father's Day

Bob,
Thanks for this great report . . . and it helped confirm a sighting I had today of a Cedar Waxwing at South Mesa. Nice to know I wasn’t crazy! Missed the Catbirds and the Lazuli Bunting.
