I got good looks at an empidonax flycatcher in the Olive Marsh in
Pueblo this morning. Unfortunately it disappeared before I could take
any photos. The bird looked fine for a Western type flycatcher, very
nice tear drop eye ring, greenish black, yellow underparts, tail
moving up word. Given this early date and the bird being on the
plains, I wonder if the bird was a Pacific Slope Flycatcher, and not a
Cordilleran Flycatcher. I typically don't think Cordilleran
Flycatchers are very early migrants returning back to Colorado. Of
course, the limited time I saw the bird, it didn't make any noise.
Since Cordilleran and Pacific Slope Flycatchers looks the same, and
may even be the same species, we'll likely never really know.
