This weekend, both Saturday & Sunday, Urling & I took Denver Audubon groups to Castlewood Canyon SP, and walked the Homestead Trail. We spent a lot of time not seeing birds that we heard -- and that some of you might find of interest.
Two American Redstarts singing, an adult male and an immature male; Cynthia Madsen and Bob Santangelo got pictures.
Two Ovenbirds singing; Bob got a few pictures, but only he and Cynthia saw the elusive thing.
Four Warbling Vireos; a few in our Saturday class managed to see one.
One Cordilleran Flycatcher at the bridge. I think everybody glimpsed this guy.
Invisible Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, conspicuous Spotted Towhees, elusive Lazuli Buntings, possible an Indigo Bunting (unseen, of course). And wonderful soaring Turkey Vultures.
The Bobolinks have returned to the Winkler Ranch, visible through scopes when you can pick out one singing, flying, and perching. Let's hope that the haying schedule fits in with the Bobolink nesting schedule (last year it didn't).
And a note on the 10 Bluebird boxes at our house, north of the park. Two active House Wren nests, one inactive one (the local wren has an off-kilter song and perhaps can't attract a lady wren), and one partially built wren nest that now has in it baby Tree Swallows. One box with 2 inches of grass - bluebird or swallow? And five vacant boxes.
