We've now had 3 days that look like pretty normal mid-spring days for
us......maybe I shouldn't say that! 36 new, 1 return, 17 recaps (birds
already processed this season). Two common first of season birds - a
Western Wood-Pewee and a Bullock's Oriole, both arriving late. Plus a
Magnolia Warbler, which is rare - only 3 since 2008, although 2 of those

I found a 2nd-year dark morph Reddish Egret at Blue Lake (Adobe Creek Reservoir) in Bent County today. It was 1/2 mile north of the outlet gate structure on the west side of the outlet canal. Access is via Bent County Road UU, which heads west from Bent County Road 10. I think it's best to park below the dam, just past the cattle guard on the west side of the dam.

Well, the floodgates have finally opened along the northern front
range. List includes sightings over the last 6 days, in a range of
habitats. Numbers seem lower than last year this time, and many migrant
passerines seem a bit late.
Key:
DD = Doudy Draw, Boulder County
DC = Dry Creek, Westminster and Broomfield - from Big Dry Creek Park to
Metzger Farm
BC = Bear Creek Drainage up to Bear Creek Canyon, Boulder Mt. Park
G = Lower Gregory Canyon, Boulder; along with lower Flagstaff Mt Trail near
Gregory Canyon
SK = lower Skunk Creek, Boulder Mt Park
SBC = South Boulder Creek Trail to Mesa Trail (near Eldorado Springs)
W = Walden-Sawhills, Boulder
SI = Sienna Reservoir area, Broomfield
PR = Present or Common in many localities
 
Broad Tailed Hummingbird - PR - not in large numbers. Includes Boulder,
Westminster, and Broomfield.
Western Wood Pewee - DC and W
Say's Phoebe - PR - since February; in good numbers where habitat matches
Western Kingbird - DC, BC, G, SK, W - numbers increasing; territorial fights
Eastern Kingbird - W - at least three
Warbling Vireo - DC, SI, W, G
Tree Swallow - PR - a few
Barn Swallow - PR - spreading out; in large numbers everywhere; nesting has
begun
Cliff Swallow - PR - large colonies already repairing and building nests
under bridges
Northern Rough Winged Swallow - DC, W
Bank Swallow - DC - nesting activity
Violet Green Swallow - PR - in large numbers (5-20-25) swarming up foothill
drainages
House Wren - PR - just about everywhere - nest building
Blue Gray Gnatcatcher - DC, BC, DD, G, SK, SBC - both males and females
Gray Catbird - DD, BC, DC, G, SK, SBC, W, - in very good numbers this year
Virginia's Warbler - BC - three singing near lower Bear Canyon
Audubon's Warbler - SBC, G, DD - late migratory groups still coming through
at lower elevations; both males and females
Wilson's Warbler - DD - only one
Yellow Warbler - DC, BC, W, SK, SBC, G, - large concentrations at Walden \
Sawhills
MacGillivray's Warbler - BC, DD, G - a few - all singing
HOODED WARBLER - SBC - at grassy picnic area adjoining parking lot at 7:45
am 5-20-25 - male singing vigorously and loudly, while catching insects.
Foraging and singing in upper canopy, mid-canopy, and lower canopy. In
willows, apple tree, poplar trees, and box elders. Chasing other birds.
Behavior indicates this bird may be establishing a nesting territory.
Caught good sights on and off for three-hour period.
OVENBIRD - BC - have come back near the Bear Creek drainage, near the stone
footbridge and up to the Bear Canyon trail intersection. At least 3
singing males. (last year there were six here). They will continue
singing until the end of July. Good luck seeing the little buggers though
- they maintain good cover and can throw their voices.
Common Yellowthroat - PR - have returned in good numbers in many locations
Yellow Breasted Chat - DD, DC, BC, G, SK, SBC - fairly good numbers;
actively singing
Western Tanager - DC, BC, G, SK, - not many yet - hopefully numbers will
pick up
Green Tailed Towhee - BC, SK, - a few
Chipping Sparrow - DD, BC, G, DC, SK - large flocks are just starting to
come in
Lark Sparrow - Adams County Fairground and Platte River drainage - only a
few
Savanah Sparrow - initially in large numbers near Boulder Open Space
Headquarters last week, but then they mowed the grass, and most seem to
have moved on.
Lincoln's Sparrow - DC - only one seen
Vesper Sparrow - one near DD (5-20-25)
White Crowned Sparrow - DC - still a couple at lower elevations
Black Headed Grosbeak - DD, SBC, SK, G, - numbers increasing; songs and
chases.
Lazuli Bunting - DD, BC - numbers are very low right now
Yellow Headed Blackbird - Teller Lake #5 has good numbers (off Valmont Road)
GREAT TAILED GRACKLE - at Walden (1), at Brunner Reservoir Broomfield (1),
and at Teller Lake #5 -which had 6 last week. Loud. Raucous. Hard to
miss.
Brewer's Blackbird - only 2 at BC
Brown Headed Cowbird - PR - just about everywhere
Bullock's Oriole - DC, BC, W, - all males singing and chases. Large
numbers along Dry Creek.
 
Blooming: Chokecherry, Hawthorn, Spiderwort, Yellow Violet, Purple
Mustard, Dandelion, Sand Lily, Goldenbanner, Wild Iris, Yellow Evening
Primrose, Vetch and Milkvetch species, Lavendar Penstemon, Bush Penstemon,
Toadflax, Desert Parsley, Meadow Salsify, Blue Flax, Skunk Bush, Arnica
species, Death Camus, Mouse Ear Chickweed, Fleabane, Larkspur,
Sulphurflower, Orange Globemallow, Groundsel species, and on and on.....

The banding station was fairly quiet with birds. However, it was nice to
hear a Swainson's Thrush singing before dawn- beautiful song. Most birds
seemed to have moved on. There was still a Chestnut-sided Warbler and
Yellow-billed Cuckoo around from yesterday. Many flycatchers were feeding
around the olive grove. With our few birds captured we caught three
recaptures from yesterday. A Blue Grosbeak returned from last year.

Tomorrow through Saturday the banding station will be open from Sunrise
until @ 11 AM. Stop by and report your sightings.
