A screenshot (also known as screen capture or screen grab) is a digital image that shows the contents of a computer display. A screenshot is created by the operating system or software running on the device powering the display.

The first screenshots were created with the first interactive computers around 1960.[1] Through the 1980s, computer operating systems did not universally have built-in functionality for capturing screenshots. Sometimes text-only screens could be dumped to a text file, but the result would only capture the content of the screen, not the appearance, nor were graphics screens preservable this way. Some systems had a BSAVE command that could be used to capture the area of memory where screen data was stored, but this required access to a BASIC prompt. Systems with composite video output could be connected to a VCR, and entire screencasts preserved this way.[2]

Screenshot kits were available for standard (film) cameras that included a long antireflective hood to attach between the screen and camera lens, as well as a closeup lens for the camera. Polaroid film was popular for capturing screenshots, because of the instant results and close-focusing capability of Polaroid cameras.

On Windows systems, screenshots of games and media players sometimes fail, resulting in a blank rectangle. The reason for this is that the graphics are bypassing the normal screen and going to a high-speed graphics processor on the graphics card by using a method called hardware overlay. Generally, there is no way to extract a computed image back out of the graphics card,[citation needed] though software may exist for special cases or specific video cards.

One way these images can be captured is to turn off the hardware overlay. Because many computers have no hardware overlay, most programs are built to work without it, just a little slower. In Windows XP, this is disabled by opening the Display Properties menu, clicking on the "Settings" tab, clicking, "Advanced", "Troubleshoot", and moving the Hardware Acceleration Slider to "None."

A common problem with video recordings is the action jumps, instead of flowing smoothly, due to low frame rate. Though getting faster all the time, ordinary PCs are not yet fast enough to play videos and simultaneously capture them at professional frame rates, i.e. 30 frame/s. For many cases, high frame rates are needed for a pleasant experience.

Some companies believe the use of screenshots is an infringement of copyright on their program, as it is a derivative work of the widgets and other art created for the software.[5][6][7] Regardless of copyright, screenshots may still be legally used under the principle of fair use in the U.S. or fair dealing and similar laws in other countries.[8][9]

Newbie here.
My dearest tech gal friend Karen (BFF too genetic) who used to help me through these dilemmas passed during Covid but I do try to carry on as she taught me. Learning and searching and stretching my boundaries.
Little over a week ago my 3 year old HP Envy hit be with that dreaded blue screen of death. I fought (muddled) my way into DOS (scary territory for this old gal I tell you!) but totally reinstalled windows 11, and as I don't store anything much on the hard drive the possibility of loss was slight.
I had fabulous success (Thank you my lost friend) and got up and running reloaded all apps etc.
But I am stuck with one single glitch, try as I might I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong
I save my screenshots to my DB and into a folder simply named screenshots . . have done this since friend Karen introduced me to the program some 10 years ago . . .
Now all my screenshots are still going into the DB but they won't go into the folder / file but are loose at the bottom of the screen
I know it's probably something ridiculously simple but to this basic appliance operator I'm rather tired of fighting this on my own so humbly come looking for help
Thank you ahead of time

So it has been close to a week since I asked my question and well over two weeks trying to solve this issue including on my own, all to no avail.
Then
Yesterday My lappy says it need to shut down and reboot to correct an issue.
I'm thinking oh lordy it's going into it's death throes!
I agree to restart and it turns off and I go do chores and some of the dozens of things I needed to be doing . . .
It's probably an hour when I come back and attempt to log in.
Everything goes perfectly smoothly . . Out of curiosity I take a screen shot. Surprise of surprise! Screenshot is exactly where it is supposed to be! Not sure how it got all corrected but I'm very happy to be back up to my version of normal!
Thank you folks for input and help!

Thanks for responding
That was one of my quandaries. My app did not show this option
It did/does for capture but not for screenshots
I messaged directly to dropbox about my app and they gave me another link to another way to download the app - probably the correct app for my Hp laptop.
Now I can't get the old one to uninstall "uninstall fails"
I'm going to attempt to download the recommended version and see if that will let me uninstall the one I have or both then once again download the proper version -
I hope
Then I figure I will be at square one to find the proper solution to my initial issue
Thank you again I think this is a great lead!

OK I'm back to square one
I found also that my preferences were not behind a gear or tools but behind my profile pic.
Checked out preferences and if I didn't have it before, yes I now have the screenshots checked
Since uninstalling and reinstalling my recent screenshots are going back to Drive C videos / captures

There is NO "import" tab anywhere under my dropbox preferences. I have already unchecked the "share screenshots and screen recordings using Dropbox" as well as "Enable camera uploads for:" photos and videos.

Ugh, I'm trying to stop dropbox screen shots and I'm unable to complete the task. The directions refer to a perferences tab which is not found and I am not able to find where to find screen shot syncing. Help, pleaseandthankyou Screen shot attached here-ha! but now sure you can see it.

We used Asana in the past, and it was extremely easy to take a screenshot and then paste it directly into the comments section of a task/row. I'm not seeing any quick way to do this in Smartsheet. Is the Smartsheet process to take a screenshot, save it, and then add it as an attachment? If so, this is super inefficient. We use Smartsheet for implementation projects where our clients take screenshots during testing to give us context into issues they find. Seems impractical to have to go through the process of saving the screenshot down as a file to be able to attach it to a row in a sheet. I know we're able to take a screenshot and paste it directly into a cell in a sheet, but sometimes we need to add multiple screenshots, so that's not very helpful.

Would love this functionality! We're swapping some projects from Teams based communication and found this is a hinderance. It is much more natural to be able to screenshot and paste, rather than have to attach a file and reference it
