Background

India is endowed with a rich and vast diversity of natural resources, water being one of them. Its development and management plays a vital role in agriculture production. Integrated water resources management is vital for poverty reduction, environmental sustenance and sustainable economic development. Water resource management is the activity of planning, developing, distributing and managing the optimum use of water resources. It is a sub-set of water cycle management. Ideally, water resource management planning has regard to all the competing demands for water and seeks to allocate water on an equitable basis to satisfy all uses and demands.

Due to cyclones and floods, the coastal areas are frequently inundated, thus causing loss of crops, human lives etc. Groundwater problems are also significant in coastal areas apart from the surface water problems. The backwater through the streams and rivers, aquaculture practices, excessive pumping of groundwater are the main sources of salinity contamination in the shallow aquifers. The ground and surface water is also deteriorating due to industrial effluents, poorly treated sewage, irrigation return flows, and unsatisfactory household and community sanitary conditions. Water resources management requires a holistic and integrated view that considers the surface and groundwater together. There is need to promote the integration of all aspects of planning, management and protection of water resources by developing plans which aim to satisfy basic needs and promote equitable and effective distribution of water resources, ecosystem protection and maintenance of the water cycle. Climate change, land use change and the hydrological variability of water distribution and occurrence are natural driving forces that, when combined with the pressures from economic growth and major population change, make the water resources management a challenge.

The objective of the conference is to provide a platform for academicians, researchers, field engineers, policy makers, managers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and research scholars for exchanging knowledge, experiences and share innovative ideas on water resources management in coastal regions. The presentations and discussion made during the conference would also be of immense importance for planning future research activities for Integrated Water Resources Management in the Coastal Regions. Although papers addressing the theme of the conference are desirable, papers addressing a broader area of water resources Management are also welcome. About Deltaic Regional Centre, Kakinada The National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) is a Government of India Society under the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (MoWR, RD & GR), GOI and has been functioning as a premier research Institute in the area of hydrology and water resources in the country since December, 1978. The research activities of the Institute are being carried out in six Scientific Divisions at the Headquarter at Roorkee, two Centres for Flood Management Studies at Guwahati and Patna, and four Regional Centres at Belgaum, Jammu, Kakinada and Bhopal. The Deltaic Regional Centre (DRC) was established in 1991 as the 5th Regional Centre of NIH in the coastal town of Kakinada, East Godavari District, A.P. The Centre seeks to address specific hydrologic problems of east coastal and deltaic regions of India. The jurisdiction of the Regional Centre extends from Kanyakumari in Tamilnadu to West Bengal along the east coast of India. This year DRC, NIH, Kakinada is celebrating its SILVER JUBILEE year and as a part of its celebrations this two day National Conference is being organized.

The conference shall be held at Hotel Royal Park, Kakinada during December 8-9, 2016.

Call for papers

Researchers, academicians, engineers, professionals, planners, managers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are invited to present their original work, case studies, modeling and experimental work as technical papers under the aforementioned themes in reference to coastal regions. Abstract of papers not more than 300 words in Times New Roman (font size 12) should be submitted by e-mail to nihkak...@gmail.com by October 31, 2016 The abstracts will be reviewed by the Technical Committee and selected authors shall be requested to submit full length papers (not exceeding 10 pages including tables and figures on A-4 size paper) on or before November 21, 2016. The papers will be reviewed and published in the form of proceedings or an edited volume. Necessary instructions regarding preparation and communication of the manuscript(s) will be sent along with the acceptance.

About Kakinada

Kakinada is a medium sized town and district headquarters of East Godavari Dist. in Andhra Pradesh State and it is well connected by road & rail (Kakinada railway station and Samalkot junction- 15 km). The nearest airports are Rajahmundry (70 km) and Visakhapatnam (170 km). The weather generally remains cool in Kakinada during December and average temperature varies from 18-25° C.
