Title: Soil Pollution in Rivers’ Deltas
Subtitle: Sources, Fate, and Remediation in Dynamic Coastal Environments
Book Description:
River deltas are the world’s most productive—and most threatened—soils. Home to over 500 million people, deltas as the Nile, Ganges, Mekong, and Mississippi receive the accumulated pollution from entire upstream watersheds. Yet no existing volume focuses specifically on the unique soil pollution dynamics of these coastal sedimentary environments, where tidal flushing, salinity fluctuations, and sediment deposition create contaminant behavior unlike any other soil system. This contributed volume fills that gap. It begins with a global comparative assessment of soil pollution in major deltas, then systematically addresses natural and anthropogenic sources—from urban-industrial hotspots and agricultural intensification to shipping and petroleum extraction. Core chapters explore how delta-specific drivers (redox oscillations, saltwater intrusion, seasonal flooding) alter the transformation, mobility, and bioavailability of heavy metals, radionuclides, PAHs, and emerging pollutants like microplastics and PFAS. A dedicated chapter on biological pollution covers pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes concentrated in peri-urban delta soils. The book then provides practical assessment methods tailored to tidal and salinity gradients, followed by risk assessment for delta communities dependent on rice and vegetable cultivation. Crucially, remediation techniques are re-evaluated for anoxic, saline, or alternately flooded conditions, and real-world success stories from the Mekong, Mississippi, and Nile deltas offer replicable models. Policy chapters address transboundary governance and international frameworks. Essential for soil scientists, environmental engineers, delta management authorities, and researchers in marine and coastal pollution.
