FYI:
The Coast Rail Coordinating Council (CRCC) will be having a joint meeting with the LOSSAN agency this Thursday, August 30th. The Coast Rail Coordinating Council is a coalition of transportation agencies interested in restoring Coast Daylight rail service along the Coast Line between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The agenda has been posted
here. The agenda includes a short report on the status of efforts to restore the Coast Daylight.
The reports indicates three requirements to start Coast Daylight service:
1. Rail equipment- One new trainset will be needed. Amtrak has agreed to provide a trainset if the other two requirements are met. Further, California's latest order of new rail cars will arrive in 2015 or 2016.
2. State operating funds- $7.5M/year is needed to run the service. In the past, the state Department of Finance has denied Caltrans requests for funding, due to lack of host railroad agreements.
3. Host railroad agreements- Capacity modeling studies are ongoing. Union Pacific and the Coast Rail Coordinating Council disagree on modeling findings so far. Caltrans has hired an independent consultant to make recommendations.
