Friends,
I am very happy to begin teaching classes in my shop. I've been thinking and talking about this for years as some of you know. I can't imagine anyone in our Guild wanting to take these classes because they are very basic and will use only the Vandercook, however if you know of anyone who might be interested please pass this announcement along.

Happy New Year,
Norman

Introduction to Letterpress Printing
January 25th, Saturday, 9 am - 5 pm
Fee:  $125 (plus material fee of $20)
Everyone in the class will handset a short poem in foundry type, build their form on the bed of the Vandercook and print multiple proofs of their typesetting. In the afternoon, we will learn a simple book structure and bind together copies of each others printing so that each student can take home a small book of the day's work.

This is an opportunity to learn the basic operation of a Vandercook SP15 proof press and tour a working letterpress shop here in Ojai. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of topics including ink mixing, photopolymer platemaking and how a letterpress shop operates today.

Instructor Biographies
Norman Clayton
Norman Clayton studied typography and photography at the Rhode Island School of Design, and graduated in 1990 with a suitcase full of books he designed, printed and bound by hand. The RISD typeshop was the place where his appreciation of letterforms and letterpress was developed because that was where all his passions came together... typography, printing, photography and bookbinding.

For 12 years, beginning in 1991, he was the printer and manager of One Heart Press in the San Francisco Bay Area. The shop was named One Heart Press because of the mutual appreciation for letterpress shared by Michael Osborne (owner) and Norman. During those days, he learned how to print well and stayed busy printing job work, posters and books. In 2003 he left One Heart Press and began working more closely with his mentor Jim Wehlage. Around 2006, upon his retirement, Jim offered to sell Norman his shop Classic Letterpress which included Adrian Wilson's KSBAZ Heidelberg Cylinder, stone, and a portion of Adrian's library. Norman moved the shop to Oakland and continued his focus on high quality printing.

In 2010, he moved his family and letterpress shop to the beautiful Ojai valley. With the move he was able to triple the size of his shop, acquire more equipment and type, and maintain his clients in the Bay Area while building clientele and community in the Ojai area. Norman continues working happily, with a view of the mountains, as a printer, typographer and teacher for younger printers. He prints posters, fine press books, stationery, invitations, and more for clients, all over the country.
Kaarina Tienhaara
Kaarina is a photographer/ book artist, residing in Ojai. Books have been an integral part of her life, even before she was a librarian at UCLA, so learning to make them was a natural step. Soon after she started working  there, she took her first (traditional) bookbinding class with Margaret Leakey through UCLA Extension.

After leaving UCLA in the 1990's, Kaarina had time to dive into the exciting world of book arts again, enrolling in workshops as they were available. Discovering and participating in the Guild of Book Workers with its annual Standards of Excellence in Hand Bookbinding conference and six annual 12-day Paper and Book Intensives, immersed her ever more deeply into the world of book arts. She's  taken classes and workshops with many of the masters in the bookbinding world, including Tim Ely, Gary Frost, Don Glaister, Daniel Kelm, Monique Lallier, Kitty Maryatt, Tini Miura, Keith Smith, Claire Van Vliet and Laura Wait, learning a wide variety of bookbinding skills, techniques, and structures (ranging from historical models to artists' books).

She also  has experience in many complementary fields, including papermaking, dyeing with natural dyes, basketry, and various art techniques. Kaarina particularly enjoys creating innovative one-of-a-kind artist's books, each with its own unique "binding." Her creative process unfolds gradually, intuitively, with each step revealing the next. Her books have been in numerous exhibitions in the U.S., Canada and France. She enjoys teaching and sharing her love for book arts.
