On Package Management
One thing that grinds my gears is that I seem to be acquiring software from many more different sources these days. This is true of macOS and Windows too. The Linux space however historically set the expectation that the package manager carried everything one needed

It would be nice to see these engines listed in Ubuntu Software in addition to the many open source engines. Regardless of what folks think about the nature of proprietary software, having it listed in the store communicates that Ubuntu is a viable platform for that given tool.

People already mentioned the PPAs and Gnome but I also want to add this tip: the ananicy / automatic NICE daemon is indispensable for gaming and regular work. Makes the desktop visibly faster and prioritizes the known game executables.

For the non-Steam perspective, I recommend taking a look at the itch launcher and the issues on their github - they used to have a deb-package but now switched to their own installer. The app expects the system to already have wine and 32libs.

I have been pretty happy with gaming on Ubuntu 20.04LTs so far, steam proton is awesome. I dont really play the newest releases so it has been working well for me.
Online games are an issue due to anti-cheat and hopefully that improves.

More mouse customization options. I can adjust sensitivity but I cant change the mouse scroll wheel speed. I have been using imwheel package to get around it and it works fine so far but would be nice to just change that easily in settings.

Easy way to create shortcuts on desktop like right click send to desktop on windows. Steam and WINE add shortcuts automatically but its a chore to do manually for old games or indie games outside of steam that are just zip files with an exe. I know I can manage those games using Lutris and launch it from one place but still would be nice to have.

I also use a bunch of gnome extensions and tweaks and as ah-86 mentioned, those can break. More customization option would always be nice. And more options for sound as well, if i remember right, getting surround sound to work using SPDIF was a challenge that I gave up on.

If all the above setups are addressed gaming on Ubuntu will be in a much better shape. In my opinion the random issues currently plaguing much of the above scenarios is the biggest obstacle for wider spread of Linux gaming.

Since games are as noosy as other applications, i think an optional firewall could come in handy.
If an app want to connect to the net or a new host prompt the more expierenced user and give us the options to only block a specific host&port, the app completely or give it free access.
Maintaining a local statistic about which hosts, apps, ports get the most incoming&outgoing traffic also can serve as a helper to fix analytics locally and missing TLS upstream.

Does the average gamer stick to the LTS releases or the semi annual releases?
Even with LTS the hardware , or more specific gpu release cycle should be well covered.
So a rapid kernel upgrade in my eyes is unneccessary

@local-optimum We started a community project in Ubuntu Budgie discourse, where we are working on a special section of our Budgie-Welcome snap, completely dedicated to gaming. If you want to have a look at it, please use the edge version of the snap ubuntu-budgie-welcome on our flavour.

The Epic Games Launcher crashes as it performs its first mandatory update during installation, rendering it non-functional. I'm using a Win10 64-bit bottle, and I have even tried pre-installing the DirectX and Visual Studio and etc. libraries ahead of time. Anyone else having trouble?

Directly in Wine I can get it completely installed and working including signing in and seeing all the games I have. Of course I can't install anything because they require windows, but that is ok. I just want the free games for now.

I just did this again using Crossover 19.0.1 and Linux Mint LMDE 4. The process still works. I also see the apparent crash after Preparing Launcher. I just clicked Dismiss and proceeded with the steps of installing the core fonts to the bottle and adding the argument to the end of the command. Still working like a charm.

Two things come into my mind:first try this command /opt/cxoffice/bin/cxfix --auto it will install every dependency needed; Second, is dxvk installed and updated to its latest version? Let me know bye

I'm a linux user I don't know macos environment that much... Try to install dxvk in your epic games store bottle, maybe it can help if it is a rendering related issue that prevents the client to load.

Epic gameslauncher is a very broken application on wine. I've managed to successfully install it using a windows 7 64 bit bottle installing 64 bit dependencies (is a cross tie that install many version of dotnet and visual c++). After the updating process starts it will eventually get stuck trying to apply the update, force quit the bottle, go to epic games bottle settings and select dxvk (do this step now and not before) now you should be able to log in. The launcher will pop up but the rendering is broken it blinks, without dxvk it's only a black screen. With a lot of patience and frustration you should be able to select and run your game in the library.

Hi guys good news I found an open version of epic games launcher. The projects are written in python they are called legendary and rare. There's a windows python installer too, I've installed and using successfully the linux version, soon your pain will be over this simple launcher is a blessing. You have the store you can purchase install and downloading games and dlc. Soon I'll change my crosstie you'll enjoy a windows like experience without headaches.

install the latest python release for mac -3.9.1-macos11.0.pkg . After python is successfully installed in a terminal type pip install rare (if an error occours run pip3 install rare, but first try pip). Pip is a powerful script that will install the software and all its dependencies for you, once pip has done its job, in a terminal type the command rare. I don't know if rare can actually interact with crossover as of now, but you can run your game going to its installation folder and run the game's exe with crossover. I wrote to rare developers about adding this feature, I'm waiting their response.

Since I don't own a mac my help is only based on suppositions. Apple developed some sort of wrapper called rosetta 2, the code written for intel x86 cpus theoretically runs as native on M1 chips. Try to install this python package for intel macosx -5.15.2-5.15.2-cp35.cp36.cp37.cp38.cp39-abi3-macosx_10_13_intel.whl . Change the file name in 1.whl open a terminal in the folder where the file is located and type pip install 1.whl , let's see what happens. Maybe you need to install rosetta to use the wrapper, as this site states -to/install-rosetta-m1-apple-silicon-mac/ . Hope it helps as said before the mac is a riddle for me, since I don't have it.

I found the right solution for you, you can use pip through crossover wine, so you can use rare even if the native solution is not supported for apple m1 chips. Create a windows 10 64 bit bottle and name it python exactly python. In it install visual c++ 2015-2019 64 bit and the latest python version for windows -3.9.1-amd64.exe . Open the bottle with the file browser inside drive c go to /c:/users/crossover/Local Settings/Application Data/Programs/Python/Python39/ . In it should be an exe called python.exe rename it in python3.exe . Open this folder in a terminal and run this command /opt/cxoffice/bin/wine --bottle python --cx-app python3.exe Scripts/pip.exe install rare . Pip will install all necessary things. After pip has done, in the folder where you are right now go inside search for the folder scripts go in there and you'll find rare.exe execute it thorugh crossover and you are done you can login browse the store and download games. On linux it works 100% let me know if on mac works too. Rare as of now is far from perfect, but it's solid it works. When you install a game the gui will crash but the CLI terminal will remain open, fear not it means you are downloading the game, once the game is installed the cli will close just reopen rare and you'll find the game you've downloaded, same occours for syncing saves. The developer is working on to fix this issues, in later version all of this will be fixed. Through it I've successfully downloaded and playing with for the king with the saves correclty synced.

Try to import this bottle with rare installed by myself -QEI9GAHy3EOxComoOj/view?usp=sharing Run the python script called Rare, right click on it and select run with option, else it won't run. Let me know if that helped

I tried but it tells me "unidentified program"
In the drive C: Program Files or Program Files x85, I don't have any program installed like legendary or rare
Under the user / crossover / local settings / application data, I have the python rename in python 3, and a "pip" folder

I don't know what to say... On linux it works. Since I don't have a mac I can't help you any further... The last thing you can try is to download the rare exe from github open crossover with root permission and then execute rare.exe in a windows 10 64 bit bottle ( I don't reccomand this approach for security reasons).

I thought you can try with heroic, instead of rare. I don't know if is compatible with mcos but I think it's worth a try if you want to experiment some more. Run this command in a terminal curl -o- -sh/nvm/v0.37.2/install.sh bash . Then type this nvm install v15 . To check if npm was correctly installed type npm -v, if a version is reported you did it correclty. Then type sudo npm install yarn --global. After that type sudo npm install heroic --global. If the last step doesn't work I'll show you how to compile it from source.

Now that you have yarn you can try to compile heroic from source. Bear in mind that heroic wasn't developed with crossplatform support in mind, the developer uses and actively support only linux (debian distributions in particular) so it's just a desperate last attempt. Go to the git hub page of the project and download the source . Unzip the code into a folder and place the source folder where you like. Go inside heroic unzipped folder and open it with a terminal and type yarn install, yarn will install everything you need, as long as macos supports the modules heroic needs to work properly.
